ftj fa ti$ gtorim ASTORIA. OREGON: SUNDAY . ..KOVEMBEK 11. 1S88. THE BEST WAY TO LOOK AT IT. It is doubtful if there baa been an election in the history of this coun try which has been so free from per sonal abuse and villification, or one in which the result depended so much on the intelligence of the voting citizens of this country. As a natural conse quence there is less hard feeling, and it is a pleasure to note the philosoph ical resignation -with which the result is accepted by the unsuccessful con testants for control of the nation's policy, the good will which is ex pressed and the evident desire to give the victorious party a fair trial in car rying into practical operation the principles of the platform on which it successfully appealed to citizens for support by their ballots. The large and enthusiastic proces sion, which filled the streets of our city last evening, was all the more gratifying to see, because it was a procession which paraded, not so much to commemorate the victory of one party and the defeat of another as to celebrate the triumph of those principles of political economy upon which our prosperity as a nation so much depends. And, as a matter of fact, the result is not a defeat to the large body of Democrats whose opin ions coincide with Republicans as to the policy of protecting American in dustries. A HORRIBLE HOLOCAUST. Driven by lire, Men Leap to Death. Uthers Btay to iJurn Alive. The 'Kearsase" Ordered to Haytl. West Virginia Still in Doubt. Rochester, Nov. 10. Last even ing's fire was the worst that ever oc curred in the city. At least twelve lives were lost and twenty persons injured. The pecuniary loss will amount to S250.000. The building is approachable only on one side, and the firemen had only n narrow alley to work in. The building stood on the edge of the upper falls on the Genesee river. These falls are 96 feet high, and when the firemen ar rived the windows on the street side of the building were filled with men calling for help. There were sixty five men inside and soon the air was filled with falling human bodies. At least twenty persons jumped from the third story and all were more or less injured, and five died before they could be remeved: John Gall, fore man of the works, Joseph Douser, Joseph Webber, Henry Snyder, 0. Qchs, and twenty-one missing. It is supposed that all missing are dead in the ruins. It was reported at 10 a. m. that ten more bodies had been found in the ruins. It is now known that nine lives were lost and fifteen persons badly injured by last night's fire. Three more bodies have been taken from the ruins, burned to a crisp. It is impossible to recognize them. THE "TIMES'' WILIi APPEAL. Edinbueo, Nov. 10. Charleston, West Va., Nov. 10. Latest returns show the state ticket to be close, if not Republican. HEAVY WEATHER. New York, Nov. 10. The unusual rough weather at sea during the past two weeks has delayed all incoming steamships; s dense fog overspread the lower bay up to noon. Not a passenger vessel has been sighted, although nearly a dozen steamships are from one to three days overdue. A HORRIBLE DISCLOSURE. St. Ambbosk, Quebec, Nov. 10. Complaints have been made recently concerning tho condition of the oity reservoir for water. The authorities finally resolved to empty the reser voir, and when the task was com pleted yesterday, the remains of elev en children were discovered in an advanced state of decomposition. The authorities are at a loss to know who are" the authors of the murders. GOING TO LOOK AFTER MATTERS. Portsmouth, N. H., Nov. 10. The Kearsage yesterday took aboard her powder, having received peremptory orders to go to sea to-day and pro ceed to Port an Prince. Havti. to pro tect American interests there, but the order was countermanded on acconnt of the reported arrival of the Boston at Kingston, the latter vessel being ordered dv cm Die to proceed to ttavti. Bnt the Boston had sailed before the dispatch reached Kingston, and ar- rived at Nbw Ynrlr nn Hin einVitVi This caused a renewal of the Kear sagfs original orders, and she left uere uuoui noon io-aay. DINING WITH MRS. LANGTRY. Bill Nye Has a Perfectly Delishtfal Time. Mrs. Langtry, on the day I speak of j wore a new dres3 of lavender berege, trimmed with a different color round the bottom. She wore a sort of a brown straw turban, and her hair was done up in a hard knot at the back of her head. Her hair is a deep brown in color, and quite nice to look at She has a calm, honest eye, and be haved like a perfect ladv all the time. I sat at her right at table; also on the edge of her dress, by mistake. When we rose from the table she rose before I did, for I had lost my place on the menu, genuy driiung back to bosom of lamb with mint doing onto it a dish of which I am very fond, and one which we rarely get at home. I was eating some more of this when the rest had reached the doxology, and I did not notice that Mrs. Lang try was trying to rise. Bnt she kept her temper like a perfect lady, wait ing cheerfully until I had finished my meal and put a few raisins in my pocket, to eat on my way home. Then she begged my pardon, and would I please take my chair oil her dress. Why, of course I would. For, as a matter of fact, it was my fault. Quite a number of notable people were present, and several of tbem said that Mrs. Langtry and I looked first-rate together. They then laughed heartily, as who should say, "Are we not having fun?" Mr. Mo Dongal, the artist, who has himself been cursed by the fatal gift of beauty, and who sat by Mr. Gebhard all through the luncheon enjoying the gentle solitude of that shoreless waste of vacant mind, said I seemed to heighten the effect of Mrs. Langtry. He then made a rough drawing which purported to be made on the spot and showed it to the other guests, most of whom, I will say. were too well- bred to enjoy it as much as they would have like to. I was dressed plainly in a qniet yellow and black blazer, with a flan nel shirt of some inflamed tint, caught together at the throat with a large knot of blue polka dot silk. I wore no suspenders, but held my nicker bockers in place by means of a linen and white silk stomacher or cinch, which attracted much attention from one and all. That is ono thing I like about me. I can dress gay and frivolous, or I can be grave or taciturn with those who prefer it. . A AVoiuau's Disco cry. "Another wonderful d!scoery lias been made and that too by a lady In this county. Disease fastened its clutch es upon her and for seen years she witlistood its severest tests, but her i tal organs were undermined and death seemed imminent. For three months she coughed incessantly and could not sleep. She bought of us a bottle of Dr, King's New Discovery for Consump tion and was so much relieved on tak ing first dose that she slept all night and with one bottle has been miracu lously cured.
