E. church last night, the first part consisting ot a musical and literary programme, which was well carried out, each selection being well recieved. At the close of the literary entertainment came another feast, not for the mind, bat the body, which was equally welcome, and all present enjoyed themselves. An old newspaper man of Corvallia wrote to the postmaster in a neigh boring town inquiring about a delin quent subscriber. The letter came back endorsed, "The man is dead." Some time afterward, in overhauling a list of delinqnents, an inquiry was inadvertently sent to the same post master about the same man. The reply came back: "Still dead." The Manzanita came in yesterday. The men at Tillamook rock reported seeing butter kegs afloat yesterday and the day before. This, coupled with the piece of wreck on the weath er beach leads to mnch painful sur mise. The A. B. Field is believed to have left Tillamook on the 5th inst., and it so, was due here the following day. Hon. C. Leinenweber and J. J. Stokes were among the passengers, and her arrival is awaited with an xiety A singular coincidence, says the Oregonian, has come to light in con nection with the death of Mrs. W. J. Clooney of Astoria, which occurred in this city at 3 o'clock Sunday morn ing. Her death was quite sudden, and was caused either by the burst ing of a blood vessel or heart disease. She was in the best of spirits the night before and there was nothing to indicate that the end was near. At the precise hour that she died her canary bird, a pet, died at the family residence in Astoria. It, too, had been m good spirits all day Saturday, singingmerrily, but towards night its notes became sad, and a few minutes before three its singing was so plain tive as to be noticeable. Then its notes ceased and it was dead. Some Vessel Dismantled. When the Qen. Gray telegraphed yesterday afternoon to Montesano for news of the missing steamer, and re ceived a telegram from that place Baying that the Gen. Miles had ar rived safely yesterday morning. The question now arises, from what steam er comes that piece of wreak? Senator J. N. Dolpli. United States Senator J. N. Dolph came down on yesterday morning's boat. He expressed considerable gratification over the good news that came from New York, and said that Oregon's majority for Harrison would probably be 9,000. He also mani fested satisfaction on hearing of the 414 Republican majority that Clatsop county rolled up last Tuesday. This is Senator Dolph's first visit to Asto ria since the adjournment ot the re cent session of congress. He has been a faithful steward ot the inter ests instructed to his care and de serves well of this section. It was senator Dolph on the committee on conference that succeeded in having the appropriation for the Columbia bar? improvement increased from 8300,000 to $500,000, and it was large ly due to his efforts on that importan conference committee that that sum was voted in the river and harbor bill as passed by both houses. A train on the Savannah & Western road, containing 125 passengers bound for the Macon fair, was wrecked near Ellaville yesterday morning. The killed are Charles Scoville, Dodd Tiston, Henry Martin, George Davis and John Hannover. A dozen others were injured, among them conductor Singleton. A Warning. The modes ot death's approach are various, and statistics show conclu sively that more persons die from dis eases of the Throat and Lungs than any other. It is probable that every one, without exception, receives vast numbers of Tuberole Germs into the system and where these germs fall upon suitable soil they start into life and develop, at first slowly and is shown by a slight tickling sensation in the throat and if allowed to con tinue their ravages they extend to the lungs producing Consumption and to the head, causing Catarrh. Now all this is dangerous and if allowed to proceed will in time cause death. At the onset you must act with prompt ness; allowing a cold to go without your attention is dangerous and may lose yon your life. As soon as jou feel that something is wrong with yonr Throat, Lungs or Nostrils, ob tain a bottle of Boschee's German Syrup. It will give yon immediate relief. Wahkhknro Connty Election Returns. Avaluable caTgo of British Colum bia salmon left Victoria a few daysL aero lor Xionaon oy tne isntisu bars Norci-oss, which carried 43,000 cases, valued at 8258,000. She also had a large lot of naval stores, valued at S42.000. Cargoea, valued at S300,000 are not often shipped from Victoria, or from any other port on the Pacific coast To the best of our recollec tion, this is the most valuable cargo ever cleared from Victoria. Two vessels have preceded the Norcross this season for England with British Columbia canned salrBon. It is pos sible that another may follow, though we believe the remainder of the catch has been forwarded either over the Canadian Pacific railway direct to Canada, or by way of San Francisco. It is known that most of the one mill ion cases packed on the coast this year have gone forward to markets of consumption. There are some con signments of Alaska salmon here which will be cleared out this month. As a whole the season has been a profitable one. and the supply will be sufficient for the world's wants nntil next April, when n new season will open. 8. F. Bulletin, 5. A Novel Wavjof Advertising. Mrs. Frederick Grant, while on a shopping tour last week in New York, indulged in the very latest whim of adornment la a bracelet which she wore over the sleeve of her dress, was set a watch. It was not a miniature time piece, such as has been used for some time in jewelry, bnt of the ordi nary size carried by ladies. It was in all respeots like an ordinary fine watch ot inlaid gold, except that there was no stem or ring. It had a hunting ease, however, and when it war shut it might have passed for an unusually big medallion. But when she held up one wrist and with tbo other hand touched a spring, the cap flew open, end there was a dial exposed right side np for herexamination. Such is new fashion in jewelry, and Mrs. Grant is one of its pioneers. A SnIV Inrestiui'iit.
