San Feancisco, Sept. 3. While Justice Field, of the United States supreme court, was rendering a decision adverse to baran Aitnea in the celebrated Sharon case in the circuit court this morning, the lat ter drew a pistol and fired at the justice, but without effect. She is now under arrest. Sarah Althea's husband, Judge Terry, drew a knife and attempted to stab one of the marshals. He was, after a stubborn resistance, deprived of the weapon, and fought like a maniac. It took the com bined efforts of all the marshals to handcuff him. His wife, still struggling and raving, got one band free, and before any one could stop her aimed her pistol and fired. No one was hurt, but one of the deputies had a narrow escape. Before she could aim again tho weapon was wrenched from her and she was handcuffed. The celebrated Sharon case came up in the circuit court this morning in its most sensational form. The decision which was rendered by Justice Field, of the United btates supreme bench, was a revival of the old decision which prevented Sarah Althea (now Mrs. Terry) from claiming to be the wife of AVm. Sharon, and declared fraudulent the marriage contract and ordered it canceled. When it was apparent that Jus tice Field's decision was going against Sarah Althea, the latter arose from her seat and exclaimed, 'Judge i leltl, bow much have vou been paid for that decision? You have been bought, andyouknowit." The judge ordered tier removed from the court room, when she drew a pistol, and would have fired at the justice but for the timely interference of several deputy marshals, who dragged her out fighting like a tigress. Deputy marshal Dean, who took the knife away from Terry, had a narrow escape with his life. He nor anyone else was expecting such an attack, and before they were aware Terry had drawn a dirk about eight inches long and made a vicious thrust at the depu ty. Had his foot not slipped, or rather had he not been oppor tunely tripped up by marshal Franks, deputy Dean would now be resting on one of the slabs at the morgue or a bed in the receiv ing hospital. lhe pistol used by barau was a British bulldog, six chambers, loaded in every chamber and evi dently brought with the intention of using it if justice Field's deci sion was adverse. As she faced tho judge, when she made her first speech, there was murder in her eye, but in all her appearances in the various courts, she never looked to so great an advantage from a pictur esque standpoint as when she stood up and defied the judge. Her eyes flashed fire, wrinkles dis appeared, and her face flushed blood red, the veins stood out on her forehead like whip cord, and as she hurled tho words, "How much were you paid for that deci sion?" she looked like an Amazon deying her enemies. As soon, however, as the hand of the mar shal was placed upon her, she collapsed. She lost all her dig nity, and at once became a mere virago. Judge Terry, as his wife first addressed the bench, did not move, but as justice Field issued the order, "Marshal, arrest that woman," he arose and barred the way. His usually florid face was pallid, his eyes sank into his head and he wore the appearance of a man just awakening from a crush ing blow. As the lust of battle, however, came over him, the blood leaped back to his face and the look of hate and passion that set tled there made him look like a fiend incarnate. He was a des perate man, and nothing but his speedy disarmment saved blood shed. This afternoon justice Field ad judged Sarah Althea and judge Terry guilty of contempt of court, and sentenced the former to six months and the latter to thirty days imprisonment in the county jail. Ajer's SSarsaparilla will cure your catarrh, and remove that sickening odor of the breath. An Overtasked Congressman. Those who consider that a con gressman's Jife is all play should listen to the lament of Hon. Frank Lawler. When asked what he had been doing during the day, the congressman replied: "I got up at five o'clock and answered forty letters before leaving my room. I spent two hours chasing about the departments trying to find places for three of my con stituents. Then I rushed to the capitol to attend a committee meeting and when that was fin ished i called at the dentist's and had two teeth filled. I was near ly dead when I dropped into the chair and when the man of forceps and mallets got through with me I was too exhausted to stand. I re turned to my desk to find twenty five letters had arrived in my ab sence, and before the day closes I will get twenty-five more. All these must be answered before I go to bed, and I'm so sleepy now that my eyes close in spite of me. To add to my troubles a persist ent old woman who wants a place in the treasury is waiting for me in the corridor nearest my seat, and I'm afraid to go back in the house."
