The modes of death's approach are various, and statistics show conclu sively that more persons die from dis eases of tho Throat and Lungs than any other. It is probable that every one, without exception, receives vast numbers of Tubercle Germs into the system and whero these germs fall upon suitable soil they start into life and develop, at first slowly and is shown by a slight tickling sensation in the throat and if allowed to con tinue their ravages they extend to the lungs producing Consumption and to the head, causing Catarrh. Now all this is dangerous and if allowed lo proceed will in time cause death. At the onset you must act with prompt prempt ness: allowing a cold to go without your attention is dangerous and may lose you your life. As soon as you feel that something is wrong with your Throat, Lungs or Nostrils, ob tain a bottle of Boschces German Syrup. It will give you immediate relief. A Cliarmins Duet. CALDWELii,O.,Aug.30. Arnonth ago a mysterious disease appeared here. It had some of the characteristics of typhoid fever and some of malaria. Whole families ware attacked. In the course of a fortnight nearly every family was affected. The death rate became alarming and many families have left town. Business is almost paralyzed. Funeral processions are almost constantly in tho streets, the physicans are nearly worn out and medicine seems to do no good. The disease does not'appear to bo infec tious except to residents here, for outsiders are not affected. It is be lieved that the disease germs are in the water. The town has no system of drainage. The number of deaths is now 25. The population is 1,800. SHOBT CEOPS. New York, Aug 30. The Times has a long cable dispatch which esti mates the old world needs from sev enty to eighty million bushels of wheat more than the harvest of the year will produce. To put it in an other way, the countries which al ways have to buy wheat, this year mnst buy three hundred million bushels, while the countries raising nore than they can consume will have 295 million to sell. The storms ot the past week have greatly dam aged wheat in England and the great producing country of France, which was thought a week ago would im port sixty-eight million bushels will now have, it is estimated to import, eighty million to ninety-five million. Algiers cannot supply much of this on account ot grasshoppers. The best estimates put the surplus of the United States and Canada at 103 mil lion, Russia ninety million, India thirty-five million; but all sorts of stories are coming from Russia, and latterly these are unfavorable. In Londoti bread has gone up one penny per loaf. The potato crop in England and Ireland is a partial failure, and great distress is believed to be certain. The 7'imts is summarizing the re ports from all parts of the United Kingdom and says there will be enough wheat for home consumption, but not a great deal to spare. a MiNonnr report. Wasiiinoton', Ang. 30. Represen tative Gallinger has completed the minority report upon the result of tho investigation of the printing committee in the administration of the government printing office. The report is bitterly critical of public printer Benedict and a majority of the committee; it defends Round's administration cs honorable and able, and declares that enough violations of Jaw and evidence ot incompetency have been shown by the testimony to warrant the immediate removal from office of Benedict. man license in Minnesota. St. Paul, Aug. 30. Tho Pioneer Press reviews the first year of high license iu Minnesota, and finds tho system has proved all its friends claimed for it. The state has only 1,597 saloons against 2,800 when the law went into effect. There is a de creased consumption ot liquor in nearly every county; low groggeries havo been closed and there is better police supervision. The cost of a license before this law was enacted averaged $300; the total income fur nished 8850,000. It is now SC.7J and the income is 81,100,000. committed suicide. Denver, Aug. 30 A. G. "If you want a first-class item about a chicken ranch on a largo scale," said a person just up from tho sea side to a reporter yesterday, "just hunt up Mr. Sol. Hirsch. He is loaded to the muzzle with informa tion on the subject" Now, since wo havo been importing so many eggs from Iowa, and are about to import chickens by the car load from Illinois, tho chicken and egg question is one of great interest to the peoplo of Orogon, especially any information as to how hens can be kept in large numbers successfully. So the reporter hied away to Mr. Hirsch's office and requested him to tell all he knew about chicken ranches. "The problem of running a chickeu ranch on a largo scale is solved," he said. "I have seen a successful one. While at the seaside a few days since I met an old friend, Mr. S. K. Stan ley, who used to keep tho Seaside house. He informed me that he was engaged in the bnsiness of raising ggs for the Astoria market. Ho told me such fish stories about his ranch, as I thought, that I determined to go and see it. 'His nlace is on Ohanna creek, about two and a half-miles from tho Seaside hotel, where he and his wife own and attend to 2,000 layiDg hens, which produce 1,000 dozen eggs per month on an average. It is a cold dav when they do not gather from 600 to 800 eggs, and keep this up ev ery day m tho year. Tney warrant all the eggs they sell to bo fresh, and have never had onosent back to them yet. -"Near tho place is a creek anil a lake where tho tide- rises and 'falls every day and along the shores of these the fowls find plenty of insects. The soil is sandy and the hens have plenty Of room to roam around. They are fed a sack of wheat a. day, and when necessary fresh meat is fur nished. There has never been any sickness among the fowls, such as is so com mon where large numbers of fowls are kept together. Many chickens are raised, but none are marketed except young roosters. Mr. Stanley keeps increasing the number ot ins hens, and expects to be able to successfully manage 4,000. "Mrs. Stanley stated that she had found that keeping a large number of hens on a piece of groirhd was the best plan to kill out fern, ttiis pest being entirely destroyed from the chicken yards." Mr. Hirsch could not say what va rieties of hens Mr. Stanley1 kept, but he knew that they imported some fine cocks aud hens which coat largo sums, tie was very enthusiastic about this chicken ranch nud said he would sooner' have it thau a dry goods store. "Why," "said he, 'au in dustrious couple can got a hundred acres of land nnd make '320,000 in ten years." , Here is a pointer fpr ipoultry rais ers, ir tney cannot tuace a success inland let them fly to'.the shore where the chickonB can roll'in tho sand nud catch clams and oysters and inhale ozone, and keep their lungs nnd di gestive apparatus in good order, and furnish a plentiful supply of eggs the year round, and redeem onr state irom me aisgraco ot importing eggs, to say nothing of chickens. Perhaps somo poultry raiser can give some in formation in regard to the desirabil ity of seasido property for chicken raising. Oreyoniun, .10. Their Business Booiuiu?.
