i- 5y J S $fa gattjj gtfiomu. ASTOBIA. OREGON: WEDNESDAY. JVJLY 4. 18SS. 0 Wf COUNTRY'S BIRTHDAY. Whatever political or party feel ing any one may have, all unite in do ing honor to our country's natal day, and looking up to thnt starry emblem of the freo as it sinks and swells upon the breeze, feel pride in the thought "that is the flag of my country." The Fourth of July is the one day that every boy from six years old tt sixty-six has a perfect right to make all the noise he can; to be as patriotic as possible, and to turn loose for all he is worth. A quiet Fourth of July is no good; the noiser it is the better, and on this of all days in the year a little effervescence, a little exuberance of feeling is to be allowed. This is really the children's day, and the children should be given the most prominent part. We older chil dren of larger, growth know more of history and have read about our he roes and great men, but all that the little folks know about is "the Fourth of July," and the observance of to-day is a part of the necessary training for the'future "Grand Army of the Ke- public," that will soon take our places and be the men and women of the next generation. Their souls should early be filled with the love of country, and it is a good object lesson in patri otism to give the youngsters a rousing time on the Fourthof July. The largest, or more appropriately, perhaps, the smallest, real estate swindle yet has recently developed itself in Chicago. A lady of that city recently exchanged S1.300 worth of furniture for threo notes of S200 each and a lot described as 25x125, she, of course, understanding tho dimensions to be in feet, until sho received her deed for a piece of land 25x125 inches. By that time she had permitted the dealer to tako the furniture, and it was too late to savo herself. COUNTY COURT PROCEEDINGS. Tuesday, July 3rd, '88. Jos. Sinnott appeared with his sureties, D. Lovely Woman on Horseback. Did you ever observe a woman just before she is lifted into the saddle and a few moments after the horse has struck a canter? She becomes a charmed being. Tho roses spring to her cheeks, the light seems to leap from her eyes, her form is the inspi ration of graceful action and she be comes a beauteous picture of movinc health. And this, after all, is the best view to take or horseback ridintr. Aside from all of its charms, its spe cial or general beauty, it is the most healthful exercise within the province of woman. It is better than dancing, lawn tennis, croquet, rowing, archery, There are many reasons why it is better, and one of the strongest seems to be that it brines continuous change of scene, which tends to rest the body.as well as tho mind. The fascinating effeot which it has on the fair rider can not be estimated, pro viding sho has a well trained horse and indulges in moderation. Heaven And Earth. "Behold that golden and gorgeous sunset, Angelina!" rapturously ex claimed her own Augustus. "Is it not transcendently beautiful?" "Pefectly heavenly." "How the rich crimson melts into the delicate pink! How sweetly both colors blend with the amber tinse of the broken clouds about them! What emotion does that magnificent scene raise in your soul! What does it re mind you of i" "Strawberry ice-cream with a dish of vanilla," she meokly replied, and she did not leove him a nickel to pay his homeward car-fare." Umbrellas Repaired At my old stand.
