There are only two logging camps at work on the Willapa now, the rest having been shut down on account of over produc tion of logs. The two camps at work are running with a small force. A store is to be established on North river, by Mr. Harris, of Uosmopohs. He expects to .lo cate at the intersection of balmon creek. Some half a dozen new families have lately gone into the valley and settled. Mrs. Howerton, whose health was supposed to be improving, died suddonly at the Ilwaco hotel, on hnday .night. Her remains were taken to Portland for inter ment by the side of her son, who died there about two years ago. D. Warren has again been awarded the contract for carrying mail on the bay, and this time gets $4,000 a year, or $26 a trip, an in crease of $1,000. The postoffice department is bound to stay with Warren in the face of all protests of the people of this section. It has been known a long time that there is coal on North river,as a few years ago several large chunks were picked up there and when burned found to be a good class of coal. The coal found on Mill creek is said to be a fair quality of blacksmith coal and has been used for such purpose with suc cess. Those coal mines ought to be opened up. J. M. Mclntire, president of tho Nasel Logging Co., met with a painful accident one day last week. He was at headquar ters and had climbed on a scaf fold to take down some tackle used for hauling up beef, when he lost his balance and fell back ward to the ground, striking on his back across a ladder. Tho fall produced insensibility, and at hrst it was thought a rib or two bad been broken, hut it was afterward learned that he was not seriously injured. He is now able to be about once more. Mr. John Wood informed the Journal Tuesday that their returns from San Francisco, on the rock recently sent below, shows as high as $12 in silver and a good trace of gold to , the ton. The prospects are so good, that a com pany has been formed to open the mine and proceed to work on the ledge. Articles will be filed at once incorporating the company, and already men are at work tunneling the ledge. They want to send two or three tons below on the Rosalind when she sails. A wagon road is being built to the mine so that the rock can be hauled out easily. We sincerely trust that this may turn out well enough to pay for working, for it it does it will prove a big thing to develop Willapa valley. A witty ladv says; "If you want to find out a man's real dis position, take him when he's wet and hungry. If he is amiable then, dry him and fill turn up, and you have an angel."
