Greatest Curative discovery ever maae. Onr Climate. The great Japan gulf current, flowing by our shores on the west, and the chain of mountain ranges on the north and east modify our climate to such an extent that if it were not for these conditions we should experience, that severity of weather so common in the north ern part of the eastern states. As it is, our climate is mild and healthful, and a temperature of 85 degrees during' the hottest period in the summer is unusual, and the freezing point in winter is more so. The immediate coast region has a smaller range of tempera ture, while the great "inland em pire" of eastern Oregon has more frequently a temperatute of 100 degrees in summer, and zero in winter, than have the large and fertile valleys of the interior. The appellation of "web-feet" is con ferred on Oregonians, but this is a misnomer. True we have our rainy and dry seasons, but by the one we do not mean continuous rain, nor by the other a continu ance of dry weather. By the former it should be understood that it is merely to designate the possibility of rain rather than the rain itself. An explanation ot the rainfall recoid will show how er roneous is the idea, held by many an easterner, that it rains all the time in Oregon. From the 15th of September to the first of No vember, we have showers; and same from March 15 to May 15. From November 1st to March I5th, the rainfall is copious; not too ex cessive, nor of daily occurrence. Even in this period it will be clear for days, and sometimes weeks, together; the grass is green and growing, and it resembles the east ern spring. From May loth to September 15th wc have iicca sional showers, but so few of these that tins period is, called the dry season. Professor Proctor estimates that 100,000,000 people lived and died in America 100,000 years before Uoluinbus set sail for America, It is probable that if Proctor had in formed Columbus of this fact, the latter would have set out to dis cover America 100,000 years be fore he did.
