"When the ejes become wcaV-, and the lids inflamed and sons it is an evidence that the system has become disordered by Scrofula, for which Ayer's Sarsaparilla is the best known remedy. Scrofula, which produced a painful in flammation in rnv es cs. caused me much suffering for a number of yeais. By the advice of apiiysiciani commenced tailing Ayer's Sarsaparilla. After using thfi medicine a short-time I was completely Cured My eyes aro now in a splendid condi tion, ana l am as well anci strong as ever. Mrs. William Gage, Concord, K. II. For a number of yean I was troubled with a humor in my e cs and was tinabta to obtain any relief until I comnipiH ihI using Ayer's Sarsaparill.i. This n.c di cino has effected a complete cure, and I believe it to bo the best of blood puri fiers. C. E. Upton, Nashua, K. II. From childhood, and until with a few months, I have been afllictcd.with Weak and Sore Eyes. I have used for theso complaints, with beneficial results, Ayer's Sarsaparilla, and consider it a great blood, purilier. Mrs. C. Phillips, Ulover.Vt. , I suffered for a year with inflamma tion in my left eye. Three ulcers formed on tho ball, depriving mo of sight, and causing great pain. After trying many other remedies, to no purpose, I was final ly induced to use Ayer's Sarsaparilla. By Taking three bottles of this medicine I have been entirely cured. My sight ha3 been re stored, and there is no sign of inflamma tion', sore, or ulcer in my eye. Kendal T. Bowen, Sugar Tree Kidge, Ohio. My daughter, ten yeare old, was afflict ed with Scrofulous Sore Eyes. During the last two years she never saw light of anv kind. Physicians cf tho highest standing exerted their skill, but with no permanent success. On tho- recommen dation of a f riond I purchased-'a bottle of Ayer's Sarsaparilla, which my daughter commenced talcing. 'Before slid had used the third bottle her sight was restored. Her cure is complete. "V. E. Suther land, Evangelist, Shelby City, Ky. tt Ayer's Sarsaparilla, Prepared by Dr. J.C. Aycr&Co., Lowell, Masa. Bold by all Druggists. Trice $! eli bottlc,'5. THE ANNUAL- -MEETING OF THE stockholders of the AstortaBuildlngand Loan Association will be held Tuesday, May 8th, 1838, frora2P,ii. until 8 r. m, for the purpose of electing directors for the ensu U17 year. By order of the president. LE()BBj Secretary. The Festive Blneback. For some days past there has been a most extraordinary run of blue back salmon at both the Ca-scades and the Dalles and tons of these handsome fish averaging about five pounds each have been taken in dip nets at both places. Three years ago the biueuacKs usea to be sent here from the Uascaues lor six bits a dozen, and tho men who risked thoir lives fishing for them from stagings and platforms rigged in perilous places along the sides of the foaming torrent, where a misstep meant certain death, re ceived but slight compensation for their dangerous labor. Things are different now, as bluebacks are worth 4 cents here spot cash and 5 cents delivered at Astoria. A day or two since one man made $64 catching bluebacks, and an other made $50. A number of Indians who fish on tho Washing ton territory side of the river have been making $20 a day on an aver age for several days. Tho fishing places used by these dip net men are on government ground near tbe locks. The fish caught at tho Dalles are used iu a cannery there and all hands are kept busy of lato. Till within the past dayorf two tho only wheels running at tho Cas cades were those mounted on scows, but tho lato rise in tho river has started several of the other wheels, and if warm weather con tinues they will all be going short ly, and then the bluebacks and al so the Chinooks will need to keep a bright look out to pass the rapids in safety. From the Iar-je number of bluebacks caught, it is to be supposed that a great many have passed up, and unless somo foul work is done away above, enough of them will reach their spawning grounds in Wallowa lake to fur nish "seed fish" for tho settlers there and to keep up the Bupply. Oregonian, 7. Women In Business. In this age of extreme activity and wonderful developmont, it is a notewor thy fact that many women have made their own way in mercantile life, and successfully compete with men in many lines of business. Women, whether they labor in the household or in the store, are all liable to suffer from func tional derangements and tho cares of maternity. For all troubles known un der the category of "female weakness," Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescription K r. tonic and tried specific. It relievos iii greatest sufferers, and lestores the ,: tientto vigorous health and strength. It is tho only medicine for women Mud by druggists, wider a positive gnaruiitee, from the manufacturer, that it will give satisfaction in every case, or money will bo refunded. Tills guarantee lias been printed on the bottle-wrapper and fait! -fully carriedout for many years. Dr. Pierco's Pellets cure constipation, biliousness, sick headache, bilious head ache, and all derangements of the stom ach, liver and bowels. A man living in this countv, who owes over two years' sub scription, put his paper back in tbe postoihee last week marked "refused." Wc have heard of many mean men there is the man who uses the wart on tho back of his neck for a collar button, and the one who pastured the goat on his grandmother's grave, the one who stole coppers from a dead nigger's .eyes, the one who got rich by giving his five children a nickel each to go to bed without supper and then stealing the nick els after the children were asleep but for pure, downright cussed- ness the man who will take a pa per two years, mark it "refused" and then stick it back in the post office is entitled to first premium. For dyspepsia or stomach de rangements, no other remedy can bo found so pleasant, prompt, and offectivo as Ayer's Cathartic Pills. In an opening speech in the Jackson county Democratic con vention held at Jacksonville last Friday, Judge Willard Crawford, a Medford delegate, alter declar ing himself in favor of the nomina tion of Horatio Seymour as candi date, for president of the United States, said: "Oregon will go Democratic this year, and I will tell Republicans tho reason why. The prohibition party is well or ganized throughout the state, and its efforts will give the election to the democracy. trod bless tho prohibitionists." This sentiment met with the approval of the con vention, the members of which cheered it to the echo. Leading: medical authorities in dorse Ayer's Srrsaparilla as tho nest blood medicine. The Parson Yelled "Fire!" Pittsburgh Pre-s. They tell a story on an Alle ghany preacher, which, to the best of my knowledge, has not as yet been in print. It occurred on a very warm day last summer, and the congregation was drowsy. The preacber was a long talker, and af ter his sermon had been spread out over the better part of an hour tho congregation was drowsier. Heads began to drop on the re spective chests thereunto apper taining, and long, deep breathing became noticeable in various parts of the church. Then the preacher began to lower his voice gradually. Step by step he reduced his elocution from a fortissimo tenor to a low, soothing bass, until eventually his voice died out altogether. He looked carefully over the congre gation. All was still as death. No one stirred. All were nodding. Then the optics of the indignant servant of the Lord filled with gore. He leaned over tho pulpit away over waited an instant in that position, and then suddenly veiled, "Fire! fire" in a voice which sent its ' reverberations through every nook and corner of the edifice. That brought the congregation to life a3 though a bomb had burst under them. Une old deacon jumped up and veiled: "Where? Where?'' That's whore tho gag came in, and the minister shrieked in tones of thunder: "In hell! In hell, for all you sleepy sinners!" Only strangers sleep in that church now. Children Cry for ditcher's Castoria When Baby was sick, we gave her Castoria. (Then she was a Child, she cried for Castoria, iVhen she became Hiss, she clung to Castoria, Then she had Children, she gave them Castor! There's Virtue in Onions and Beef. What is the most strengthening food fora convalescent? Well, you know, the beef tea theory has been exploded. The most life-giving and digestible food that can be given to one just recovering from an illnes-. is chopped beef. Just take a pound of the finest round of raw beef, cut off all the fat, slice two onions, and add pepper and salt. Then chop the onions and meat together, turning them over and oyer until both are re duced almost to a pulp. Then spread on slices of rye bread and eat as sandwiches. People talk about celery being a nervine, but let me tell you there is noth ing which quiets the nerves with out bad results like onions. The use of them induces sleep, and much strength is obtained from them. That is my ideal for those convalescing or for any one who is in a weak state of health. Among Republican politicians "in Washington there seems to be no doubt of Blaine's receiving the nomination at Chi cago, unless he makes, prior to the convention, a positive declaration of his refusal to run in the event of receiving the nomination. The idea of actively working a boom in Blaine's behalf, and with his connivance, is ridiculed by Blaine men in congress, because they know that no effort "will be required to nominate Blaine, if he will ac cept. Sherman is the only candi date against Blaine who will go into the convention with any con siderable number of votes pledged to him on the first ballot. A Good Nurse.
