The secretary otthc interior has sent a letter to the scnato in re ply to the senate resolution asking in formation as to when and wh at circumstances, and by what author ity, the Tillamook Indians claim lands in Tillamook county, Oregon. The secretary enoloses a letter from the commissioner of Indian affairs, who says that in 1851 a treaty was made with the Tilla mooks by agent Hart and forward ed to the senate in 1853 for ratifi cation. No trace of any action on this treaty can be found. Super intendent Palmer negotiated a treaty in 1855, but only an empty' wrapper and a memorandum say ing the treaty had been renewed could be found. Commissioner Atkins says, as to the extent of the claim, the fact treaties had been negotiated with the Tillamooks shows that the United States had recognized their title, itnd, under rulings of the supreme court, they posseesed all the original rights to the land in question. Making Pine Butter. When the cream is taken from the milk in a sweet state, it should stand in the cream pot to ripen that is, to allow a thorough oxidiza tion to take place. If left un touched, this would take such a long time than the cream would become rancid, or at least a por tion of it would. The process of ripening may be hastened by fre quent stirring ot the cream "When this is done, 24 hours are long enough for it to stand. By this time it will also have become a little acid; it will make a prime article of butter, and keep better than if churned perfectly sweet 1 lie sweet cream butter has a creamy taste, and does not have the rich aroma that it docs when the cream is slightly sour. The formation of the acidity seems to develop the aroma. All of this delicate flavor can be spoiled bv foreign substances, and those not calculated to preserve the purity and-perfection of the cream and the butter. There is an abundance of talk among free-traders about the tariff ft'ding ihe building up of "Trus's," and thereby forcing an artificial price in various commodities. To show how absurd that statement is let them consider the price of tin. 1 hero is no tin trust in Amer ica, yet its price has gone up with in the last five years from lG.cents per pound to 35 cents. There had been no advance in the tariff on tin and yet its price this spring has been regulated bv a great French trust or combination that owned and controlled the markets of the world in this commodity. Now how about the robber tariff and tin plate? "Wo believe, how ever, that all duty should be taken off that article as it is a foreign production entirely. Du'oldcn's Arnica Salve.
