As you havenothadthcoutputof this hatchery for this year andahe last of 1SS7, I will try and give you the particulars. In the first place there is no good watur, on account of chalk, and also.it is in A poor location at the extreme end of the spawning ground. The cli mate is too cold to make it a suc cess in its present location. It was 2S degrees below zero and aver aged 10 degrees and 18 degrees for a month during the time you had your cold weather in the val ley, and wo lost at least 100,000 eggs by the cold. Our water in the hatching house was frozen over for two weeks at a time, and ice formed in the hatching house from the dripping of water, three feet thick. There was at one time at least fiftv tons of ice on the floor of the hutching house. Young fish and egg- could not be seen to work for at least the same length of tiiffc). It w.ts the worst winter I ever experienced in thp state, of twenty-nine years residence. This place could not be made a success under any circumstances, as it is "at the extreme end of the spawn ing ground, and fish are done spawning before they get there Salmon geneia'Iy spawn before they get here on the fust smooth, sanuv and small gravel bottom, and up this high, it is poor spawning ground, as the water is very swift, and there is a rocky bottom. Old residents here say therefore more salmon this year, up here than for tcu years past, and out of all this we caught nearly 4000 salmon-and in that amount we got only fifty seven female spawners, so you see they don't come up this high to spawn. ell we have closed down for good. We have turned out all young fish. Out of the fifty- seven females we got 550,000 eggc, and out of that we turned into the stream 210.000, and the amount of unitnpregnated eggs, frozen cgjs and young fish killed by chalk, poor water and fungus, was the balance, so you can see what a loca tion the old board picked out. Last year it was not any better. It is a complete failure, as it has been thoroughly tried. This year, everything that could be done to make it a success has been done and tried." IFr. A.
