Astoria derives more profit and does a greater volume of business with Pacific county than she does with Clatsop county, and it is time she was thoroughly aroused to the importance of the trade from this section. A gentleman informed us recently that he alono had pur chased supplies in Astoria the past season to the amount of four thou sand dollars and he is only one out of a number of hundreds wiio do business with that place. The fact of the matter is that we of this side look upon Astoria as our meiropo iis, with interests closely akin to our own. Hence she should re gard this section in the same ligfrt, and endeavor bv all means possi ble to cultivate a closer relation ship; she should take a prominent stand in every enterprise that will assist this sociiou and aid its main tenance. We are now trying to build -a railroad and need aid, and it is tun.- for h-r to show us what she is wiliinn- to do iu the way of encoura;iiisf it. Astoria oujrht to III no deeply interested in this matter and subscribe very liberally toward helping it along. She will be as much benefited and even more so, than from any enterprise hereto- lore contemplated on the other side. Constitutiontil or scrofulous ca tarrh, shre c3-esf etc., surely' eured by Ayer's Sarsaparilla. xstona should make a strong effort to get tliose railroad men up from California and find out if they propose to build that road to the Willamette valley or not; and if not then put theirown shouldcis to the wheel and build it themselves. They have money and can get more. Portland has enjoyed the shipping trade and commerce that comes to the Columbia river, long enough, in fact enjoyed it at the expense of commerce and shipping interests, lucre is no sense in dragging deep sea ships up a river 11U miles into the interior to be loaded, it is against everything that is practical and business-like, and comes from an old established custom entered into when the country' was new. It should be changed if the commerce ot the river is expected to be maintained and the sooner Astoria does some thing in this direction, besides talk, tlie sooner will she derive the ben efit and shipping be relieved of tho great burden now weighting it down. ihe building of that railroad from Astoria will assist in this but will not do sj alone.
