The proposition to build the line from Forest Grove to Astoria, giv ing the Southern PaciGc through connection with the coast in the northwest, may or may not -have a substantial foundation. Railway officials in this city, in a position to be advised of the situation, main tain a discreet silence, or profess to discredit the rumor. It is hardly to be presumed that the Southern Pacific iutends to ignore Portland, or to build up another seaport at the expense of this city. Still, the circumstances are materially changed since the failure of the Oregon Central, and if the South ern Pacific desires to secure the important trade of Astoria, it would be an easy matter to construct the 110 miles from Forest Grove. Whether or not there is any truth in the statement that the en tire sum of one million dollars has eon subscribed for the construc tion and equipment of the road to Abtoria from Forest Grove, and that the builders of the road con template making important im provements at the mouth of the Columbia, itis as well for Portland to look at the facts square in the face, and to realize that formidable competitors may yet arise at Ya quina and Astoria in this state, and at Tacoma and Seattle on the Sound. The ailments which afflict the kidneys and bladder are so numerous, that .merely to name them would fllll a space far outrun ning the limits of this article. Suffice it to say, that they are both obstinate and danger ous. To their prevention Hosteler's Stomach Bitters Is well adapted. The stimulus which it lends to the action or the kidneys when they are letbarzic. scire to counteract a tendency is .them to lapse, crsi, inio a staie oi pernicious inactivity, aud afterwards into one of .'jjositive organic disease, which soon destroys their delicate Integuments, poslons the iuood and causes death. A double purpose ir'served by this depurent. It promotes activity of the kid neys, aud expels lmpuritiesJroin the blood which have no notural channel of outlet. except tnose organs, uonsnpation, oiuous ness.iever ana ague, rueumaiism ana dys pepsia, are also remedied by this medicine of thorough action and wide scope.
