Brookenb rough, special agent of the interior department, is in tbe city on an official tour of inspection of land matters, etc. A brisk little sbower yesterday af ternoon laid the dust nicely. A little more-of the same medicine would bo good for growing turnips. The Oregon arrived in yesterday morning; the State sailed. She took on 725 cs. salmen: 400 Eureka; 325 Scandinavian Packing Co. The pilot schooner Qov. Moody is alongside the Warwick Castle. She has been painted and overhauled, and will have her masts put in to-day. The Manzanita goes to Tillamook rock this morning with supplies. A large part of the cargo consists of mineral oil, which will hereafter be "uiea on" the rock instead of lard oil. The closing exercises of the school in district No. 18 will take plaoe to morrow afternoon commencing at half past one o'olock p. m. Tha par ents and friends of the school are in vited to be present. JRescue No. 2 at their last regular meeting elected C. W. Fulton and J. W. Hare to repiesent the company in the coming convention at Vancouver. Alert H. & L., No. 1. elected P. W. Weeks and L. W. Holt. At a special term of the coun ty court held on Tuesday for the Eurpo3e of considering the John ay's road, was read first time; on yesterday it was read second time and allowed and ordered recorded. There will be a lawn party at Mrs. Dr. Trenchard's spacious grounds this evening, under the auspices of the ladies of Grace church. The party is complimentary to the mem bers of the Western Amateur band, and a general invitation is extended. The dykes throughout the country have suffered considerably of late from high water. Every year the dykes that are built are made wider, stronger and higher, as experience Bhows .that it is cheaper to build a strong one at the start than to try to keep in repair one built in a less sub stantial manner. Murdoch McAllister, a native of Canada, aged 37, was yesterday ex amined before a commission in luna cy and adjudged insane. His partic ular hallucination seems to be a be lief that other people are trying to force their minds into his and con trol his mental faculties. He will be taken to Salem this morning in care of Martin Foard and G. G. Smith. - Frederick "Warde, the eminent tragedian, supported by a talented company, will appear at Kos3' opera house next Monday evening, the 13th inst, in his great play "Galba, the Gladiator." The appearance of such anaotorasbe, is an event in theatri cal annals, and the mere announce ment is of itself sufficient to fill the house. Reserved seats may be had at the New York Novelty Store. The box sheet opens at nine o'clock this morning. To-morrow evening the upper As- toria- public school will have an en tertainment at the church. The pro gramme Is an interesting one, and the friends and patrons of the school lotkfora"large attendance. Besides much of merit that the programme coutains, the object of the entertain- ment the relief of the orphan chil " dred of theNanaimo sufferers is one that appeals forcibly to public charity and popular approval. The tickets .of admission are only 25 cents; chil dren under twelve, 10 cents. - A: Narrow Escape From Death. Nils Hansen, of the West Coast Packing Co., drifted out through the south channel last Tuesday morning, about three o'clock, and into the breakers, where the boat' upset and - the net went adrift He clambered ontoihe capsized boat, drifting to sea, and at three o'clock that after noon was picked up twenty miles out to sea, by the government steamer McArthur, and carried to Shoalwater bay, from whence he arrived in safety yesterday afternoon. He be wails the loss of his boat and net, but is thankful that he escaped with 'his life. It is no unusual experience for Columbia river fishermen to thus drift out on the trackless ocean, out of Bight of land or seeming hope of rescue, and it is only by the fortunate passing of a vessel that the rescue is made. LATEST TELEGEAPHIO HEWS Prom Europe and the Eastern States. Johnstown-, Pa., Juue S. A flood was caused yesterday by a waterspout west of Cooperaville, Summer county, in this state. That village is entirely under water and the destruction of property is great. Many bridges and logs have been carried offand upward of twenty houses washed off .their foundations, and at least one hun dred families in this borough alone, lost everything in the lower stories and cellars of their houses. Grub town, Coneuaugh borough, Morrill ville, Mineraville, Cambria City ana Loopersdale also suffered severely. It is estimated that in the suburbs of the city 200 people are rendered tem porarily homeless; no estimate can be made of the damage at present, but it is thought it will reach 8150, 000 in this vicinity alone. ONE PEB CENT. DIVIDEND. New York, June 8. At the di rector's meeting of the Western Un ion Telegraph Co. to-day, quarterly reports were submitted, which show that the net levenuesof the quarter ending June 30th, were about $1,050,- 000. In view of this statement the committee recommend that a divi dend of 1 per cent, on the capital stock be declared- EXPLOSION IN WESTPHALIA. Berlin. June 8. An explosion of fire damp occurred in a coal pit at Gelsenkirke, in Westphalia this morning. Rome, June 8.Crowds of persons arrived at Caprera yesterday to coni menorate the anniversary of Gara baldi's death. They laid wreaths on his tomb and visited his house. Many veteran Garahaldians who were among the visitors, -were deeply af fected. A PITEOUS SIGHT. Dublin, June 8. The gunboat lian terer to-day took the sheriff of Coun ty Clare and a body of police to Care Island, where they evicted ten tenants. Tho scenes witnessed while the .writs of execution were being executed, were pitiable. THBEE MEN KILLED. The evening Times' apecials say that yesterday the town marshal of Moosehead in Rowan county at tempted to arrest Jack and William Logan at their house. As he en tered the house he wai shot by them fatally. The fire was returned by the two men who were with the marshal, which killed both of the Logan boys. ALSACE AND LOBBAINE. Beblin, June 8. -The Strasburger Post denies semi-officially that Prince Von Hohenlae will resign the governor-generalship of Alsace Lorraine. The Lorraine bill was presented in the reichstag yesterday to . regulate municipal, appointments in Alsace Lorraine. WANTS A NEW TBEATY. Vienna, June 8. The government has proposed to Germany that nego tiations shall be opened for a new commercial treaty. WANT A 50 CENT BATE. Chicago, June 8. Nebraska corn shippers are asking the transcon tinental lines for a fifty cent rate on grain from the Missouri river to San Franoisoo. There are about one hun dred carloads offering if any one of the overland lines will make the rate named. THE IRISH LAND BILL. London, June 8. It is expected that the Irish land bill will reach the house of commons next week, and the government will ask the second reading of that measure before tak ing final steps in the crimes bill. Mahmi, at a recent council of war at Omderman, decided to refrain from making attacks on the frontier because suoh hostilities would prolong the English occupa tion of Egypt. FINED ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS. Boston, June 8. The collector at the port to-day imposed a fine of one thousand dollars on the Cunard steamship company for permitting an insane woman to land from one of their vessels. RAILROAD SOLD. Adair, Jr., it is reported, has a project which will soon be put in operation by which travel to the seaside will be more expeditions. The intention is to pnt on a steam ferry across Young's bay. A wharf or landing will be built on the other side of Smith's point, near tho oil works and from there the ferry will run to Lewis and Clarke's, a distance of about two miles. From there will be a direct road to the beach, about two miles more. There is a good plank road from Trullinger's mill westward toward the point, and the ultimate idea is to macadamize the remainder from the end of the planks to the ferry landing. This will be a considerable convenience and will aid materially in the matter of com munication between here and Clat Bop. The intention is to have the boat running by the 1st of next month. Celebrate. The committee on the proposed Fourth of July celebration met in the county court room last evening, J. H. D. Gray, chairman; C. J. Trenchard, secretary. It was, on motion, decided that the committee proceed to make 'arrange ments for the proper celebration of the approaching national anniversary It was moved and carried that tho common council be nked to donate the sum of $230 to tbe celebration fund. On motion, tho chairjnan appointed a committee of five -to" form a pro gramme. The committee consists of Messrs. Trenchard, Berry, Fulton, Welch and Dealey. It was announced that Hon. Jno. F. Caples had telegraphed- his ac ceptance of an invitation to deliver the oration. " On motion, a committee of three, consisting of Messrs. Worsley, Strauss and Reed, was appointed to propose a plan and probable cost of decorat ing the streets. It was moved and carried that the chairman confer with the officer in command at Fort Canby, for the pur pose of securing a company of men and a gun to fire a salute. On motion a committee of three, consisting of J. F. Halloran, J. P. Dickinson, and G. W. Snyder, was ap pointed as a committee on printing. It was moved and carried that all organizations be invited to partici pate in the parade and in the cele bration, and that the secretary of the committee be instructed to send a communication to each organization. On motion the committee ad journed to meet at eight o'ciock to morrow evening. The committee desire it stated that to insure proper celebration consid erably more fuuds are needed than have been so far subscribed, and that it is earnestly desjred that sufficient be contributed to make adequato'cel ebratiou of the day. The collection committee, consisting of Messrs. Ful ton, Allen and Pinschower will be on hand this morning and it is confident ly expected that the several amonnts subscribed will be doubled. Cutting Affray Last Xi-ht. About eleven o'clock last night Officer Whalen in front of the St. Louis saloon, told Dick Dealey, who was intoxicated to go home. Dealey replied in an abusivo manner when Whalen put his hand on Dealey's shoulder and said: "Go on 'home now," Dealey drew a knife and stabbed Whalen in the right sido, below the floating rib. Whalen though wounded took Dealey to jail, and with him one Saustrom, who had interfered, Tho wound bled profusely. A subsequent examination by Dr. Estes showed that the point of the knife had penetrated the abdomial cavity, and internal hemorrhage was fSared. Whalen said ho felt no pain, but was relieved from" further duty and told to lie as quietly as possible and await Further- developments iu the case. ": Sword Presentation. Co. "II.," O. N.
