A reporter of the Post-Intelli-gencer, interviewing a logger from Stuck Junction witb a train of logs, was told last Saturda: "Those five logs on the forward pair of trucks all came from one tree. We have just measurpd them, and they scale 20,300 feet, which, at going rates, will bring 142.10. The tree from which they were cut contained 13G run ning feet of clear timber. The other day I sold a raft containing 105 logs to the railroad mill, which scaled 232,700 feet, which shows an average of 2,215 feet to the log, which you will concede is a good average. By the way, I saw an item in your paper this morn ing in reference to the price of logs and the big profits, which the genial bookkeeper at Stetson & Post's mill claims the loggers are making this season, and in which he mentions my name as authority for saying that I could put logs on the market at $4.50 per thousand. To this statement T must most respectfully demur. Last winter, however, 1 did tell him that the above figure was the average cost of last season's work, but these figures have nothing to do with the cost this season, as some figures which I will give you plainly show. I now have to pay from 15 to 25 per cent, higher wages than last season; hay is "over 300 per cent, higher; feed, 25 per cent; grocer ies, 20 percent; dog fish oil is now selling at 52 cents per gallon, when last year it could be had at from 35 to 37 cents. Now, when figur ing up the increase in wages and the advance in hay, feed and general supplies, over that of last season, I find that the increased cost of putting logs on the market amounts to S1.20 per thousaud over last year's cost, or, instead of $4.50 per thousand, 5.70, which leaves the logger, allowing him $7 per thousand for his logs (which sold last yearjit 5.50) only a raise of 30 cents-per thousand, which I think is very small indeed, when the present priceo lumber is tak en into consideration. Now let us consider the other side of the question, or as a certain revcnid gentleman once wrote in his boktj. when be could notmake them hi! ance, 'Here the account changes sides.' -While in San Francisco last winter Mr. George "V. Stet son told me that the total cost of manufacturing lumber at his mill did not exceed $1.25 per thousand. Allowing a fair advance in wages for his mill hands, the cost now would be 1.37. If the mill, as claimed, made a profit on last year's cut at $8 per thousand for lumber, what must be the prohts now, when the mi'ls are selling lumber at 11, an increase of 3 over last year's prices? From this it appears that the mill's prof it has been increased $1.37 per thousand, while the poor logger only makes 30 cents per thousand by the increase in the price of logs. However, the logging busi ness is in a fairly prosperous con dition, and I hear no complaints." DYSPErSIA AND CONSTIPATION. Henry B. Archer, Receiver of Taxes of ihe City Of honkers; N. Y., saysbf :Braxdbeth's Pills : For the past ten years I have been using "Bkasdketh's Pills for self and family. We find thema feov ereign reincdy for indigestion and constipation, taking one or two every night for ten days. They are also ad mirabV blood nnrifies, perfectly harmless but exceedingly effective as a cathartic. I first used them my self, particularly for biliousness and dyspepsia. They relieved me in two weeks. I cheerfully recommend them. A curious story comes from En gland, through a private source, that the Baroness BurdetteCoutts has something that no other -woman in the world possesses -three skins. All other women have two; but what is the use of a great for tune if you can't afford yourself a little unusual luxury now and then? The third skin is made of silk, and is so exquisitely fine and close-fitting thai few people have detected its piesence. It i said to cover her whole body, from the ankles to the chin, and they (for she has sets of them) are woven specially for her. They are flesh colored, of course, and hide all wrinkles and ravages of time, with the natural discolorations of the skin that are'the result of age. Where this artificial skin ends at the throat the baroness wears a splendid collar of jewels or a vel vet band, and she never takes off her gloves while in evening dress, not even to eat her dinner. In consequence of this curious repair of the natural shrinkings and wrinklings of age, the baroness is able to wear her gowns dccollette, though since her marriage with a man thirty years her junior, the queen has never summoned her to one of her levees, whore such a costume is imperative. The 2Jame3 of Deity. It is singular that the name of God should be spelled in four let ters in almost every known lan guage. It is, in Latin, Deus; in Greek, Zeus; Hebrew, Adon; Syriac. Glasgow Tic raid. One fact revealed bj Mr. G03 chen, in a recent speech, is . ery interesting. There were, he stat e'd, ninety-five persons in England with an income over fifty thousand pounds bterling. It is almost im possible for-ordinary people to un derstand what that income means. It is a thousand a week; it is more than one hundred and fort" pounds sterling u da'; it is -as nearly as posbible, six pounds sterling an hour. A man with more than fifty thousand pounds sterling a year can spend a ten-pound note whenever the clock strikes during what may be called his working hours, and he will only be living up to his income, lie is not only rich beyond the dreams of avarice, but rich beyond whit one would imagine would be personal con venience.
