Southwestern Missouri has de veloped a type of careless individ uality little different from the conventional unconcern of the "old-time" Arkansaw squatter. A traveler on horseback, who had been out all day in the chiliing rain, stopped late inthe night at a small stone house situated at the top of a bleak knob. After the traveler had shouted until he feared that his throat had been permanently damaged, the door opened with a creak that echoed down the "hollow." "Mister," the traveler began, "I am as wet as a dog, and " "Must uv been in the rain," the native broke in, opening tho dodr a little wider and pokiog out hi3 head a little further. "Yes, since 5 o'clock this morn ing." "Got er putty early start, I low." 'Pretty early! Yes, IVo been out in the rain since 5 o'clock, and" "Rainin' when you started, T i eeiion." "Yes, but my business was so urgent that I had" to leave " "What business aro ye in?" "I am a dealer in salt, and " "Reckon that about all yer've got ith yer is melted by this time." "Got none with me, of course. My friend, 1 don't like to put you to any inconvenience, but you see " "Kain't say that i do, Mout of it wasn't so all-fired dark." "I say, you must know " "Didn't. Yer said I see."' "Well, that makes no d:rl'eiiMice. I am as wet as a dog and am very cold, and if you can't do anything else for me, let me como in and give mo a drink of water, for I am as dry as a powder horn.,' "Thought ver wuz ez wet ez er dog.5' "I am.' . "Then how ken yer be ex dry ez er powder horn?" "Here, lot us do away with these quibbles. I am in distress, and want you to holp me." "Don't be no ways baek'ards; he'p yerse'f." "You are certainly a tough cus tomer." "That's what Eli Bragg, the miller, says when he tries to client mo." "I don't care a cent what K i Bragg says, I" "Me nuther." "Look here." "Wall." "May I get off my horse and como in? "Ef yer come in I reckon ver '11 have to get offen yer horse." "Well, in case I come it), what must I do with my horse?"' "Leave him outside, 1 reckon." "Haven't vou got anv shelter for your stock?" "No." "Doesn't the bad weath' r nearly kill them?" "No." "How do you account for it?" "Ain't got no stock." "Haven't 3'ou got as much as a smoke house to givo shelter to my horse?" "Got no smoke house. All the smoke we want we get in hero." "Suppose I lead him through this gate and turn him loose in this lot?" "All right." The traveler turned" his horse loose and entered-the house. The host raked tho chunks togolher and soon a bright blaze sprang up in the fireplace. He did not stop at this small attempt to make his guest comfortable, but brought him a "hunk" of corn-bread and the boiled foot of a hog. "I am deeplv thankful to you." "Not er.talh" "I suppose there is room enough in the lot to enable my horso to walk around and keep warm?" "Oh, j'as." "I am glad that I wasn't com pelled to tie him, fearing that he might break loose and go back sixty miles, to the place from which I started this morning. I have only lost my road, but doubt less he knows well enough where he is. He is a very valuable ani mal. So you say he's got plenty of room?" "Oh, yas." "How many acres are in the lot?" "Don't know." "How far from one 'fence to the other?'7 "I don't know. . I didn't make but oue fence. There mout be another one, but I ain't seed it yet. Reckon thar's one summer's twixt here and the state line. Don't be in er hurry. W'y I never seed er mun in sick er swiver. W'y'n't I tell yer? W'y dad blame yer ugly pictur, er didn't ax me. Must be er blame fool to think that I ken tend to yore business and mine too. Good by. Arkansaxo Trav eler.
