The reason of "the sun putting out a fire" is thus explained: At the time of day when the sun shines into a room the fire is often allowed to get dull, and the sun's rays warm and rarefy the air in the room as much as the fire warms the air passing over it up the chim ney. Hence the draught ceases &nd the fire goes out. It is stated on the authority of Dr. Grawitz, an assistant, of Dr. Virchow's, that in as many as one third of the cases of so-called muscular rheumatfsm which have been examined post mortem, the presence of trichina spiralis has been demonstrated. In many of these caes the parasites must have been prtsent in the muscles for many years. The heat of fire is very likely to put a piano out of tune. This is not due to the expanding and con tracting of the strings, as general ly supposed, but to the variations produce.1 in the sounding-boards under the influence of the in creased dryness of the air, especial ly in furnace-heated houses. Sounding-boards are made of spruce, because of the superior resonance of that timber, but spruce, of all woods, is most af fected by changes in temper.it nro.
