In the justice court yesterday a resident of Nehalem was arraigned charged with violation of the game law by killing elk out of season. The evi dence proffered was insufficient to justify holding the prisoner and he was allowed to go. Inaddition to the list of subscrib ers to the Nanaimo disaster fund, at J. T. Boss's, previously mentioned an other list has been opened at the of fice of Vice-Consul Cherry; at either place the charitably disposed can leave, their contributions. A.mass children's meeting will ba conducted by OoL Woodford at Bohb' opera house Sunday at 3 p. it., and a mass temperance meeting all the churches uniting will beheld in the opera house to-morrow evening, ad dressed by CoL Woodford. "There should be a liberal response to the call for aid for those who suf fered bo terribly through the great mine disaster in Oregon," says an ed itorial in the S. F. Chronicle. Will these San Francisco newspaper men never learn a little geography? The fire department was called out by sn alarm at 9:44 yesterday morn mern ing: it was reported the West Shore mill was on fire aud for that place every one quickly headed; fortu nately the employes of the mill had suooeeded in almost immediately ex tinguishing the fire, which had caught from some sparks from the boiler. The places of nativity of the white men, who perished at Nanaimo, were as follows; England, 36; Wale3, 8; Sweden, 4; United StaFes, 10; British Columbia, 15; Capo Breton, 4; Scot land, 7; Ireland, 5; Nova Scotia, 2: Italy, 4; and Holland, L Forty-five of the unfortunate miners left widows to mourn for them, and 130 children lost their fathers. When it comes to a nice, light, easy job, the position of mail carrier be tween here and Olney, Jewell, Misha waka, and other Clatsop county set tlements -during the past winter stands at the head. Delivering The Daily Astorian around the city is a pleasant morning's" amusement alongside that tramp through the mud and the storm. Sunday morning, says tho South Bend correspondent of the Journal, was the highest tide for several years, ami it came so unexpectedly that it caused much damage to stock on the tide-land. Mr. Blake, of South Wil- lapa, lost eleven head and Mr. An derson on Johnson's island, lost four, and Q. F. Scott lost some, with others to hear from, as dead cattle are to be Been floating around plentifully. Since the legislature lowered tho price of state lands to $1.25 per aore, nearly 400 applications for land have been filed. These average 200 acres apiece, so that as most of the appli cants are intending bona fide settlers, nearly 80,000 acre3 of land have been settled on sinco February 1. Halt of the settlers have secured dear titlesJ by payment of oash for lanes, while the remainder have obtained certifi cates of sale. Tho meeting at Liberty Hall last evening was attended by a very large audience. With the usual singing, pledge signing, ete., Col. Goff, formerly electrician for the electric light company in this city, now Oregon agent for the Heisler incandescence electric light has lately sold a 160 30-candle power plant to ty S. Any dis trict containing three companies will be under the command of a major; if over three and under eight, a lieu-1 tenant-colonel will bo the command ing officer. The wheat speculators of Chicago and San Francisco, together with the sailors who do not wish to sail, have together produced a very unoommon situation for this coast, at this season of the year. About 100 vessels are in port at the various Pacific points, a few of which are loaded and can't get ont for the lack of seamen, while the others are not chartered, and hence not loading, because the prices are higher than in Liverpool. It is said that the California holders are deter mined to bull the m markets of the world, and force prices to a general advance. They have the assistance and sympathy of the New York and Chicago holders, but it is not likely that they can force prices higher un less a failure in India and Australia should assist. In tho mean time, such fine vesseis as the Lady Isabel la and Dumbartonshire have to leave the Columbia river in ballast. The funeral will take place Sunday af,ernoon under the auspices of the Odd Fellows. Captain Tackaberry was long in the employ of the O. B. & N. company, and was well known on the upper Willamette and Yamhill route, having run on the latter as mate of the Orient with the late Cap tain Jerome, for many years. A corps of visiting members of the Sixth Jinny corps went from here this morning to Spottsylvania court honse to dedicate a tablet to tho memory of the late General Sedg wick. A letter was read from Presi dent Cleveland. He paid a glowing tribute to Gen. Sedgwiok. Letters were also received from the govern ors of Connecticut, Virginia, Mary land, Ohio, Pennsylvania; Now Jer sey, New York and .Massachusetts, and from Generals Sheridan,-Sherman and Keiffer.
