The coast survey steamer ItTcArthar, Capt. J. C. Burnett, sailed from I here this afternoon for tho survey 61 certain points on the Oregon and California coast. Under pres ent instructions the party on board will make a hydrographic survey of Tillamook bay, Nehalem river, Nestucca bay and Shoalwater bay, the work embracing soundings in these waters, tbe determination of channels, etc. There is a fund of 61,700, which has been set aside for the survey of these points, and if it is not used by the first of next July the unexpended balance will revert to the government. Capt. Burnett states that undoubtedly these points will bo surveyed be fore the close of the fiscal year, when he will proceed to survey other points in the northwest coast, under appropriations that become available on July 1. Just what .these latter points will be, howev er, and what moneys have been set aside for them he has not been advised. The party expect to be on the coast of Oregon and "Wash ington during the entire summer. With reference to the work pro posed and under way on the coasts of Oregon and "Washington, Prof. Davidson, assistant in charge of the western division of the coast, to-day made the following state ment: "Capt. Gilbert has recom mended a topographic survey of the islands adjacent to Kosario strait, in Washington territory. Mr. Pratt, with Mr. Morse, has commenced a reconnoisance of the ocean shore, from Gray's har bor to Cape Flattery. The work here is considered to be very im portant, as the numerous rocks and rocky islets which are found out as far as two or three miles from the shore render the coast dangerous. Capt. Cleveland Rock well will soon begin a topograph ical reconnoisance of the ocean coast lino from Tillamook bay to Yaquina head Assistant Dickens will soon begin a similar survey at Umpqua river, Siuslaw bay, etc., and extend the survey up to Yaquina, to connect with Capt. Rockwell's work. The object of these surveys is to locate the dan gerous rocks apd shoals along the coast so that navigation may be made safer."
