a j JSftc gaittj $taran. ASTORIA. OREGON: TUESDAY APRIL 2C.1S37 THE HUMAN FAMILY. The human family living to-day on earth consists of about 1,450, 000,000 individuals; not less, prob ably more. These are distributed over the earth so that now there J is no considerable part where man is not found. In Asia, where he was first planted, there are now approximately about 800)00,000, densely crowded; on an average, 120 to the square mile. In Eu rope there are 320,000,000, aver aging 100 to the square mile; not so crowded, but everywhere dense, "and at points over-populated. In Africa there are 210,000,000. In America, North and South, there are 110,000,000, relatively thinly scattered and receril. In the islands, large and small, probably 10,000,000. The extremes of tln white and black are as 5 to 3; the remaining 700, 000,000 intermediate brown and tawny. Of the race 500,000,000 are well clothed that is, wear garments of some kind to cover their nakedness; 700,000,000 are semi-clothed, covering inferior - parts of the body; 250,000,000 are practically naked. Of the race, 500,000,000 live "in houses partly furnished with .the appointments of civilization; 700,000,000 in huts or caves with no furnishings; 260, 000,000 have nothing that can be ' called a home, are barbarous and savage. The range is from the topmost round the Anglo-Saxon civilization, which is the hignest known down to naked savagery. The portion of the race lying be low the line of human condition is at the very least, three-fifths of the whole, or 900,000,000. the roads will charge while the re vocation is in force. Just before the law went into effect the rates were very low; when on the 5ih inst., the rates advanced, two and three hundred per cent., and now comes another change. The only thing certain about the business so far is its uncertainty. Tue San Francisco "corner1' on IsVIIff6 Alim'f3!! fill IflliPrrn Bfl H A B iBlsP l&iuiJi 1 3 Vlvl Ul Real Estate Auction Sale After backing and filling for a .year, at last comes the authentic statement that the O. R, & N. property has been transferred to the Union Pacific railroad cotn- m pany. The transfer will, probably be an improvement. Of the rail road division from Portland to Huntington, we know very little; of that part of the route between Portland and here, the idea seemed to actuate that the steamers had to be run on railroad -principles, which made it hard on the oblig ing employes of the corporation who often chafed under restrictions and positive orders that they saw were mutually injurious. The general policy of the Boston O. R. & N. officers for some time seems to have been to make the business pay" a certain per cent., and for this they discounted the future. Astoria is directly and indirect ly connected with the transfer, ffat the least among the causes for satisfaction at the close of the Boston regime is the probability that the O. R. & N. holdings of secretary of war Endicott and his "influential friends may no longer tend to thwart the efforts of the tatft to secure a free river. The lease was signed yesterday. The California papers report that not since the days of "the gold fever'have so many people arrived in so short a period as have gone there from the eastern . states during the past six months. It is thought that since November last 15,000 have arrived in Cali fornia, the great majority of whom ' jontemplate permanent residence ,here. There is also a large immi gration to this state, notably to eastern . and southern Oregon, which is being settled with a great er proportionate rapidity than oth er sections of the state. Cyclones, blizzards, droughts, stifling heats, ,, etc., are among the causes that 'drive the denizens of the Missis sippi valley to the attractive shores of the Pacific. wheat attracts considerable atten tion. It directlv affects Columbia river shipping.. The ships in the stream opposite the city, and in the river are practically tied up, in want of cargoes, while every San Francisco steamer is taking full cargoes of wheat out ol the river to California. The receipts there from Oregon, dur- weeks. aggre gates nearly 10,000 tons. The combination is a strong one and its operations are extensive. . . " The Argentine Republic is get ting hold of Europe as a market for meat products. The latest ad vices from Buenos Ayres state that two vessels were.then loading there 60,000 sheep curcasses for Eng land; that a European syndicate with a capital of 83,000,000 is about to establish a grand produce market on the banks of the Ria chuelo river, and that it would not be long ere that country supplied 10,000 tons of meat weekly for Europe. Sno-nr nnd wool are being shipped from San Francisco to St. Paul and Boston, via Canadian Pacific railway. On sugar is charged $2.24 per hundred pounds. Considerable interest in militia companies is exhibited all over the state, and in eastern, southern and central Oregon, companies are be ing organized. The interstate commerce law seems to offer no obstacle to the passing of cyclones from Kansas to Missouri and Texas.
