,' !!V Cz3 SjcAdsfv phsrrclL 17, 1S37 jg deWtono. people nave naa expen- enctC'vrith old people who were hard of hearing on ordinary occa sions, but who seemed to have a preternaturally alert ear when things were fcaid which were not designed for their benefit. It is as dangerous to speak before such persons as to intrust one's thoughts to English in a foreign land, fondly believing that the hearers are only conversant with , their mother tongue. Manyttravelers can sym pathize with the feeling of shame facedness and mortification which arises when the third person sooner or later reveals perfect fa miliarity with English. It is never quite safe to rely ou the -ignorance or obtuseness of those who may overhear our conversation, or to confide in the apparent deafness of even our own grandmothers. A new variety of deafness -was observed, says -an exchange, the other day in an active business man, who was engaged in sqlicit ing advertisements. A friend, whdhad had to repeat a good many remarks to him, at last ex claimed "I do believe you are getting deaf." UI believe I am," was the can did reply. "Only -there is one peculiarity about it, I can always hear a man say 'yes,' but I am deaf as a stone wall when he says 'no.' " Alert ior the affirmative I That is a good position for auy one to take in these questioning times. A .conscientious person in quiring to be. assured wkh reference -to the character of an acquaintance of whom evil rumor had said unkind things, on being assured that the accusations were false, the reply came with positiveness as from the conven iently .deaf: business man: "I al ways listen to good about people, but I turn a deaf ear to things said against them." How soon "strife would cease " if the world were made up of such ppople! for those who heed no tales carry none. "Where no wood is, there the fire goeth eut: so where there is no tale-bearer the strife ceaseth." We all have frequent need of well-timed deafness. But, though one may be oblivious to trifles that deserve reprimand, the ear cannot be too alert for the first sign of repentance, the faintest breath pleading for forgiveness. "When he was yet a great way off," the father of the prodigal son heard the returning footsteps of his way ward boy, and tshad compassion, and ran andell on his neck, and kissed him." A horse pricks forward first one ear, then the other, gathering sounds from all directions, unbi ased, unprejudiced in his impartial judgment. But men are not all so alert, for truth whencesoever it may come. They are too apt to listen in m special direction. There are ears quick for negatives, otber which Bear only the gloomy, unpromising side of society, of men, of women. If we must hear unequally, let it be the qther way. Like the advertising agent, we should then hear more to our ad vantage. The JZxamincr has the follow ing regarding the present influx of Eastern people into Califernia: "The eastern visitor, is among us in such profusion that we no longer count him he is best measurable in bulk. When crowded into our hotels he can most easily be esti mated by the cubic yard; seeing him on the ground, we calculate him also by-the acre. At no pro Tious time in the" history of Cali fornia has he .been with us in so abounding quantity and never be fore did he manifest so tranquil an indifference to his line of retreat. He . will, in many instances, be found to have burnejl his boats, or as -the less classical but happier metaphor hath it, to -bYO' brought bis knitting. 2iOST - hail the good man with ef fusion, he may shake our hand as long as he likes, and it is no trouble to show goods. If he sees any thing he cannot roaoh let him ask for it. Possibly the prices of some of our choice lands may be of that order of things inaccessible to his means. In the matter of hos pitality, Californians justly believe themselves pre-eminent in liberal ity; in a trade with us the eastern visitor will, we venture to think, find something to remind him of his 05m thrifty spirit and provident ways. Socially our latch-string freely proffers itself to the suasion of his thumb and finger, but in a commercial sense we welcome him with bloody hands to a financial grave. May heaven bless him.,, ntden Death. DR.
