We have been told of a "busi ness" man in town who boasts that he spent only $4 in advertising last year and prides himself upon the fact. It is needless to say that he further saves monev bv not .subscribing to any of our local papers, but gets his news from the ' east, where he gets a country paper with a patent outside for a dollar a year. We do not suppose that a man of this kind would steal his Thanksgiving turkey, but if we were his neighbor we would take good care to see that our chicken coop was locked up at night. He belongs to a certain class, and it is a class that is just as dishonest as the law will allow them to be, who profit by the public labors of oth ers. They will buy property and allow it to lie idle in order that their neighbors may make improve ments and increase its value, then will sell for the increased value that has been put upon it by their neighbors' enterprise and boast of their shrewdness. They are bar nacles who cling to the communi ty and retard its progress; they reap what others have sown and regard their dishonesty as business shrewdness. Newspapers are public property, more so than any other class of business enterprise. They work for the upholding of a community. The efforts of lhe publisher and the means of the proprietor are in vested for this end, and they are supported by the community for its advancement. In thi3 city for years the press has labored steadfastly to -the end that we should have prosperity, that our county should settle up, that busi ness should be increased. We have sent out thousands of sample copies for which we never had or asked remuneration, all of which was for the sole purpo3e of spread ing intelligence about our town and valley. Articles from the lo cal newspapers are copied far and wide over the land, and San Ber nardino is known where it would never be heard of were it not for their efforts,, and then we find "shrewd business men" who imik. their boasts that while eujov ii good trade, the result of the inv paper labors, they have only p -nt -t a year with them. Is Midi a man to be trusted? lie would give short measure in dry goods, short weight in his groceries, and think that in cheating a customer he was as "shrewd as in cheating the papers ot what is lustu tlieir due. The newspapers have been supported in their efforts by some of our business menj4 they have worked to create the business which all enjoy, and yet wo have here a man who boasts tiiat he has done no part toward it while shar ing in the 'results. Suppose the whole community were like him and the papers were all frozen out, where would his business be? A community cannot live in the nineteenth century without a news paper, nor can the . news paper live without patronage, and God help that community which is possessed of many men who boast that their yearly outlay for printer's ink is only $4. President Roberts, of the Penn sylvania railroad system receives a salar3' of 35,000 a year; president Harris, of the Northern Pacific, 25,000; president Adams of the Union Pacific, 30,000; president Strong, of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe, 25,000; the presi dents of the Chicago and North western, Chicago, Burlington and Quincy, and Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul, 24,000 each. EKta Liability to ilaiarinl Infection. Persons -a hose blood is thin, digestion weak and liver sluggish, arc extra-liable to the attacks of malarial disease. Tlio most trilling exposure may, under such conditions, infect a system which, if healthy, would resist the mlasniatic'talnt. The only way to secure Immunity from malaria in localities wliero it Is prevalent. Is to tone and regulate the sj stem by improving weakened diges tion, enriching the blood, andglvlnga w hole some impetus to blllarv secretion. These results are accomplished by nothing so effectively as Hostetter's Stomach Bitters, which Iong'experlence has provddvto be tho most reliable safeguard against fever and ague and kindred disorders, as wvll as the best remedy for them. The Bitters are, moreover, an excellent invlgorant of the organs of uilnation, and an active depurenr, eliminating from the blood those acrid impurities wliicli oihJnate rheumatic ali ments. It is no new assertion this, that we are the result of our iuherited virtues and sins, plus our circum stances. We cannot stand alone, we cannot affect to ignore those from whom we have derived our origin, since they have placed upon our brow the ineffaceable seal of their own characters. Take the new born babe, lying so helpless, app?rently so unconscious in its mother's arms. Surely its mind is blank and unstained; surely upon it its parents may write whatso ever they will,"1 How mistaken the supposition! Behind the closed lids burn the fires of untold gen erations' weaknesses and strength never before suspected, lying dor mant for a generation perhaps, are to find their full development in this mite of humanity. Fifty years ago a sweet-faced woman had strange, fleeting visions of beauty; they flitted across the horizon of her menial conception and were gone. There was within her neither power of concentration nor of execution. Now, fifty years after, within this brain, yet lying fallow, the visions are stored, and in time those little fingers beating the air in impotent anger shall un fold to the world beauties hitherto seen only in dreams. His will be the power of expression, but the first dawning of his keen percep tion of the beautiful and of his longings after its embodiment had their uprisings in another soul, and were transmitted to him, combin ing there with elements transmit ted from other sources, until that combination was reached which gave to him tho power to concen trate these images and to express them. 77ie Current. Murder in Arizona. Benson, Ariz., March 24. The brutal murdert-of Con. Kyaii, an old citizen of Arizona, is still the sensation of the hour. Some think the same hand that slew Kitchen some time ago for money, killed Ryan. The crime was discovered on tho 20th inst. by Mr. Critten den, who entered the house and not seeing Ryan, looked through tho back room, used as a store, and was horrified at seeing the re mains cut up and the head chopped to pieces. The weapon, a butch er's cleaver, was lying near the remains covered with blood. Two Mexican boys who were in the em ploy of the deceased and have fled, are suspected of tho crime. Of ficers are on their track, which leads toward Sonora, Mexico.
