The care of the complexion has be come an accomplishment that no" lady of refined tastes can afford to ignore, and in leading society circles it clni'ns as much thought as do the fashions. It is an acknowledged fact that t5se variations of our climate are very se vere on tho bomplexion, noticeable by a roughness and dryness of the skin, and to counteract this effect it be comes necessary to call in the aid of art. In the selection of this agent too mnoh care cannot be exercised. Tns Astoriak is in receipt of uPor ley's Reminiscences," thejmost enter taining book of the year. It is written by Ben: Perloy Poore, tho veteran journalist, clerk of tho eenato printing records, editor of the congressional directory, and is a history of the United States government in its shirt sleeves. Sixty years of the social and political life at Washington is hero portrayed in an inimitablo way, and the book illustrates tho wit, humor, genius, eccentricities, jealousies, am bitions, and intrigues of the brilliant statesmen, ladies, officers, diplomats. lobbyists, and other noted celebrities of tho world that gather at the center of the nation. It is just the book one wants, lifting as it does the mantle of official dignity and showing just how the great men of American history lived, shows their secret motives, tho governing impulses of their lives. This is a view seldom gained. Great men's names and deeds are familiar. but the men themselves, their mental habits, their appearance, their asso ciates, their personal'characteristics, are far less known. To theso espe cially this work introduces its readers. The author puts a good many things in his book that a graver his torian would omit; but that is its chiefest charm. For instance, hero is one on General Jacksen: Writing of "Old Hickory's" times, he says: "Mail robberies were not uncom mon in those days, although the crime was punishable with imprison ment or death. One day one of Bee side's coaches was slopped near Phil adelphia by three armed men, who ordered the nine passengers to alight and stand in a line. Ono of tho rob bers then mounted guard, while the other two made the terrified passen gers deliver up their money and watches, and then rifled tho mail bags. They were soon afterward ar rested, tried, convicted, and one was sentenced to imprisonment in tho penitentiary, while the other two were condemned to be hung. Fortunately for one of the culprits, named Wilson, ho had some years previously, at a horso raco near Nashville, Tennessee, privately advised General Jackson to withdraw his bets on a horse whioh ho was ba-king, as tho jockey had been ordered to lose the race. The general was very thankful for this in formation, which enabled him to es cape a heavy loss, and he promised his informant that he would befriend him whenever an opportunity should offer. When reminded of this prom ise, after Wilson had been sentenced to be hanged, Jackson promptly com muted tho sentenco to ten years' im prisonment in the penitentiary." A. L. Bancroft & Co. are the agents for this coast; the book will bo sold only by subscription. The two volumes aro from the well kuown publishing houso of Hubbard Bros., 723 Chestnut Street, Philadel phia, and are handsomely illustrated. From the Cascades to The Dalle-. Washington, March 10. It is ru- mored that the latest plan agreed upon by certain officials of tho North-! ern Pacific with referonce to thej Wallula branch is that of construct ing on the north bank of the river a railroad from the lower Cascades to a point above The Dalles on the Co lumbia. This sectionnl road would then be in the nature of a long port age, spanning two obstructions to navigation, the intention presumably being to put on a lino of steamers to Dly the Columbia river above Tho ' uanus. ii is uuuursiuou mat mis and other propositions will be laid before the board at its regular meet ing this month, but the presumption" is that no definite decision will then bo reached, as the ofiioials hold that the first thing to be accomplished is the completion of tho Cascade branch.
