A writer in The Saturday Re view describes how the traffic along the Suez canal is directed and controlled from the office at Terreplein, near Suez. The num ber of ships in the canal at the same time is sometimes very great. On the 8th of December fast, for example, fifteen steamers cleared the canal, of which sev.en were outward bound. On the previous day nine ships cleared, and on the following day seven, so that clur iug the 8th some thirty ships were probably at one time in the canal. Sometimes there are as many as forty, and all are completely under the control of the French gentle man sitting at his desk in an upper chamber at Terroplein. The method of working is exceedingly simple. Against the wall at one side of the room is a narrow shelf or platform, along which runs a groove. At intervals this trough or groove has deep recesses, and at two places these recesses are of larger size. This trough or groove represents the canal. The recesses are the sidings. The larger inter vals arc the Great Bitter Lake and Lake Timsoh. When a ves sel has been signalod and is about to enter the canal at, say, the Suez end, a small toy boat or model, o or -1 inches long is chosen to rep resent her. A group of these model ships stands ready beside tiie model canal, each furnished with a flag. About forty have the English flag, ten or a dozen the French flag, and so on with other nationalities. As the steamer comes up and her name is known it is written on paper and placed on the toy boat. The whole num ber of ships thus actually in the canal at any moment can be seen .at a glance; and, as the telegraphic signals give notice, the toy boats are moved along, or placed in a siding, or shown traversing one of the lakes at full speed. Signals are sent from the office to the va rious "garos" prescribing the siding at which each ship must stop to let another meet and pass it. The official who is on duty keeps the models moving as he receives no tice, taking care when perhaps two ships going in opposite directions are both nearing tfie same siding to give timely warning' to the pilots in charge by means of the signal-balls and flags at each si a tion under his control from the office, and to direct which o the tso is to he up and which to pro ceed. Barring accidents, the whole arrangement goes like clock work; the clerk can read oft in a moment the name, tonnage, nation ality, draught and actual situation of every steamer; he can tell what pilot she has on board, what is her breadth of beam, what rate she is moving at, and everything else which is known about her; and he is able without an effort to govern all her movements, to prescribe, to place where she is to pass the night, and the hour at which she is to get under way in the morn ing, although he does not see her, and probably never saw her in his life. The fees which vessels pay for passing through the canal are often enormous. Some of the large liners of the Peninsula and Oriental, or the Orient service pay as much as 1,800 in making a single transit. For ever' passen ger half a napoleon, or S shillings 4 pence is charged. Three-fourths of the ships that go through the canal are English. TKSTIMOJfY OF A PAI3JTEK. I No. 105 Cabltoh Avenue, ) ' Brooklyn, N. Y. j Allcock's Porous Plasters are un doubtedly the best external remedy manufactured. I make this assertion to tbe public from my own personal experience of their wonderful virtues. Suffering from severe pains in my side and chest, contracted through a severe cold. I applied a couple of Allcock's Porous Plasters upon going to bed at night. The result waB, that in eight hours after applying them I could got up and walk about with very little pain or ache, when the night previous I could neither get up nor down without help, nor stoop to remove my shoes. I have since used them in my family for various ailmentB, and have never known them to fail to give almost give immediate relief. T. ILBackus. The recent wet weather, though re tarding temporarily work on the California & Oregon railroad, has not by any means put a stop to the work of construction thereon. Even through heavy snow storms, which raged with peculiar violence, there was not a man of the con struction force laid off. Graders are now ten miles above Mon tague,, and track has been laid on seven and a half miles of this route. Yesterday ten and a half miles of the heaviest steel railing was sent up to the front, so that there is no lack in this particular. Grades and steep cuts render this road peculiarly susceptible to slides, particularly in the early stages of the road's existence. When this road is in thorough working order it is the opinion of railroad men that it will be pos sible to keep it clear throughout the entire year with the expendi ture of very little trouble. Manufacturers of kerosene oil say that all lamps are safe,, with good oil," and that the quality of oil can be ascertained by the fol lowing test: Take a pint tin cup, fill it nearly full of water warmed so that an ordinary thermometer immersed in it will show 120 deg., pour a small quantity of oil on the water, stir it a little, then pass a lighted match quickly but closely over the surface of the oil once; if it ignites the oil is unsafe. If pur chases be made of from three to five gallons at a time, and this test be made, people can protect them selves. plaint of thousands suffering from Asthma, Consumption, Coughs, etc. Did you over try Acker's English Rom edy?
