C3J ASTORIA, OREGON: WEDNESDAY. II ".FEBRUARY 2. 1SSJ The Oregon still abides. At tho New Tork Novelty Stoio is to be found a fine stock of newest styles valentines. Mrs. F. E. Hudson announces that he is prepared to do fashionable dressmaking. Seo ndv't. The infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Adair, died on the 31st ult., of pneumonia, in Portland. The board of -fire delegates and company foremen will have a meeting at"tha.council room this evening. People that' had their water ninea boxed .had no trotrblayesterday with getting water enough fox all needful purposes. Thlsis the day back east the wood chuck comes out of hi3 hole and if he sees his shadow goes back again for sir weeks. A -ball has passed the state senate fixing the time for holding court in this county the third Mondays in February, June andSeptember. The Heppner Gazette runs a pict nrre in its columns of poor old John Roaoh, dead and gone, and says it is a oorreot likeness of J. P. Wager. A freeze up is all that is needed now- to "make the thing complete. The snow, etc, comes a little lale this winter, however, and any dotention to navigation is not among the proba bilities. Since Mrs Duniway sold the New Northwest, the Seattlo Post-Intelli-gencer, the leading newspaper of Washington territory, has come squarely out in opposition to woman suffrage. Beportsfrom north and south in dicate a big storm all along the coast. The sea is extraordinarily rough; vessels receiving constant buffeting from the waves. Fortunately, as yet, no casualties have been reported. F. Pr"Hennessey, "whose memory is dear to'many'Astoriaus. is at present working a little mining racket in New York otty. The mine is in Mex ico, tho game is in Hennessey's mind, and the joke on the investors will como in later on. Head Keeper Hornnng and the other employes of Tillamook light house here have rather a protracted stay. The rock is a hard place to reach just at -present and a locality that does not present a dazzling mul titude of attractions in a social point of view. Last Sunday Thos. Dalgetty, aged about 16, a resident of upper town, was "examining a revolver and the weapon, as Ib usual in such cases, was discharged, the bullet imbedding itself in the palm of his hand. Dr. Page cut out the bullet and tho hand is healing. D. L. Beck & Sons, M. J. Kinney, and F. H. Poindexter have formed a joint account to operate the Chilkat cannery in Alaska the coming sea son. Mr. Poindexter will go with the outfit from Astoria in June and will remain at Chilkat until the close of the season. The Scandinavian Benevolent So ciety held a business meeting last night and among other things changed the time3 of their regular meetings from the first and third Tuesdays to the second and fourth Tuesdays of each montby. Tho or ganization iB in good working order, has fifty-three members and has a prosperous future before it. The Snow & Burgess which had drifted over by the Clatsop Mill Com pany's wharf last Monday night was pulled off by the tugs 'Wizard and Escort yesterday morning, apparent ly uninjured, though a survey, of course, will be required to doteimine. The Raglan Castle, at Sand Island, lost an anchor and chain last Monday night. These are tho only casualties repotted from the vessels in the stream or at bar anchorage. After reading the accounts of the doings of the various city councils as recorded in the various exchanges, it is evident as a matter of rolative com- Sarisdn that the Astoria city council oesthe business of the city in an eco nomical manner with one or two ex ceptions. "The Seattle papers are fnll of 'insinuations against the Seattle city oounoil and think that making Seattteitea. pay 837.80 apiece for lamp posts' is a good deal" like a cinoh on the taxpayers. Daring January, says the News, 236 first-olass passengers and 480 immi grants passed Heron on the Northern Pacific bound west, and during the same time 212 first-class passengers and 435 immigrants passed Hunting ton on the Oregon Short Line com ing this way. The San Francisco steamers brought 403 oabin passen gers and about 300 in the steerage. The total passenger movement for the Bonth was 1,936 as compared with 1,797 for January, 1886. In the circuit court yesterday, in the case of Bosenbaum vs. Hobson et al., the demurrer to the amended complaint was sustained. In the case of Hobson vs. Bain & Bosen bsium the demurrer to the answer was sustained. Xn tho case of the stite vs. Julius TJdby, previously con victedrthe prisoner was sentenced to one year in the penitentiary. The case of M. Dillion vs. Mrs. O'Brien, came up on a writ of review, and was ft-gued. Court adjourned to the 8th iast. m t There are several mil a of wind oc casionally blowing in other localities as well as on the Oregon and Wash ington coast At a railroad camp eleven miles west of the Cascade tun nel last Sunday morning a breeze blew through tho woods, knocking down some big frees, which, falling, killed nine Chinamen and seriously scared nine hundred more. At an other camp close by four white men were seriously injured by falling tim ber and taken to Tacoma for treat ment. The usual excursion of the legisla ture does not in tho latest instance, appear to be an occasion of unalloyeu pleasure. Severable members of the honorable the lower house went to Taquina last Saturday, but land slides and wator slides "on the rail road tracks have up to last accounts prevented their returning. God moves in a mysterious way his won ders to perform, and if the legislature could be sidetracked at Taquina for the remainder of the session the loss wonld not be irreparable. A Pleasant Social Party. The Mistletoe Social Club cave the .third of their winter series of social dan.ces'last Monday evening, the oc casion, like the preceding entertain ments, being one of pleasure to all who participated. All Monday night the snow fell, and at daybreak yesterday morning it lay, white and pure, about three in ches in depth on the streets and roofs. In some bedrooms and kitoh ens it lay white and pure and decid edly unwelcome, where it had sifted in through cracks and crannies. A cold wind drifted it in places and till the sidewalks were cleared off and the snow in the streets beaten down, As toria presented a very unusual ap pearance. Everything that could be put on runners was out all day; and the indications at present writing are that the storm is not yet over. Rapid Beating of the Heart. So much was written about Jolin Boach at the time of his business failure, eighteen months ago, that but little remained for his obituary. Several years ago Mr. Banch pur chased the -splendid coitntrV seat once owned by Ben Holladav, the overland stage route millionaire, in Westchester county, and known as Ophir Farm. The place contains seme twelve hundred acres. Holla day bought it to please his wife, who had large notions, but he never cared to live there him3elf. To be among the politicians in Washington suited him better. Mrs. Holladay, however, set up a grand establishment at Ophir Farm, and the place soon became quite famous in a local way. But its brilliancy did not last long. Fnr a nnmber of years the bodies of Mrs. Holladay, her two daughters, who married titled foreigners, and one of her sons, have reposed in a vault un- Farm. Less than twenty years ago the two Holladay girls enjoyed some fame as American beauties. One married the Baron de Buissiere, a Frenchman, and after living very unhappily with him a tew years, died ulone in a New York hotel. The other married the Count de Pourtalo3, also a Frenchman, and she, too, after an unhappy expe rience, died in a few years, expiring in a railroad car on the way from California. Ben Holladay is still in Washington. His second son died there lately, and his body was brought to Ophir farm to be interred in tho vault under the chapel. One of Mr. 'Roach's sous, who ha3 ohargaof the place, refused to a low the intermeut. Maguiflcent Ophir farm did not bring much hap mg n uuitpui IUCIV OUO UUIIU JU VJUll. piness to tno ilolladay family. When one of tho Holladay girls be came a countess and tho other a bar oness it was supposed their golden cups of happiness wero filled to the I brim. But the draught in a golden cup may bo as bitter as in one of common fin, and the Holladay girls so discovered, as did many other am bitious young women before them. Their titled husbands turned out heartless scam and all their dreams of joy and grandeur were- soon dis pelled. It is ofteri80with dreams of that kind. New York Letter. Shipwreck and Loss of Life. London, Jan. 31. The British ship JTapunda which lelt London December 11 for Fremantie, west ern Australia, with emigrants, came into collision near the coast of Brazil with an unknown vessel and was sunk. Three hundred of those on board were drowned. The remainder were saved and have arrived at Fahia. The Ka- punda was an iron ship of 1,084 tons, bhe was commanded by Capt. Masson. Free Trade. The reduction of internal revenue and the taking off revenue Btamps from Proprietary Medicines, no doubt has largely benefited the con sumers, as well as relieving the bur den of home manufacturers. Especial ly is this the case with Green's August Flower and Boschee's Ger man Syrup, as tho reduction of thirty-six cents per dozen, has been added to increase the size of the bot tles containing these remedies, there by giving one-fifth more medicine in the 75 cent size. The August Flower for Dyspepsia and Liver Complaint, and the German Syrup for Cough and Lung troubles, have perhaps, the largest sale of any medicines in the world. The advantage of in creased size of the bottles will bo greatly appreciated by the sick and afflicted, in overy town and village in civilized countries. Sample bottles for 10 cents remain the same size, Au Active 'Protection" Policy. Tokokto, Ont., Jan. 31. An Otta wa correspondent of the Mail says: Yesterday the announcement -was made that the imperial government has consented to send men-of-war ont next season to assist in the protection of the Canadian fisheries. To the people of the Urited States doubtless thii would be anything but palatable information, but as a matter of fact, it is simply following a precedent es tablished before the Washington treaty came into operation. A prom inent official on being interviewed as to tbe correctness of the report, said: It is true that the imperial authori ties have consented to send out one or two gunboats next spring to assist the marine police in the enforcing of our fishery rights."
