A magnificent story of daring! and skill has come to the Wash- ington office of the life saving serv ice. The story is in meagre scraps of the dryest kind, but in these routine statements there is a basis for a thrilling story. It is a tale of shipwreok and saving of life under peculiar difficult cir cumstances, one of the greatest feats ever performed by any life saying crew in the service of tho government. Several days ago two propellers were wrecked off the port of Marquette, in lake Su perior. In a savage storm they were driven on the rocks, over which the breakers pounded furi ously. There were no passengers on board, but they were manned by crews of twelve men each. They were making their last trips for the season. The vessels were wrecked early in the day. There is no life saving; station at Mar quette, the nearest being at Port age City, 110 miles away. The storm was one of the bleak est and coldest, equalling in low ness of temperature some of the most bitter of midwinter. The water of this lake is extremely cold, even in midsummer. Tho people of Marquette turned out in great excitement when they saw these vessels driven upon the rocks within threo miles of the town. The propellers did not break up once after they had be come lodged, but from the fury of the waves and the storm, it was evident that they could last but .a short time. The citizens made frantic endeavors to go to the rescue of the two crews, who ap pealed to them through signals of distress. But thero was no boat at Marquette which could live in the waves then beating on the hore. After a number of efforts to communicate with the wrecked vessels the people despaired oi reaching them and stood watch ing, expecting every moment that they would give way. Tho president of the Mar quette, Ontonagon & Portage Cin railroad which runs between Mar quette and Portage City, came to the rescue at the last moment, dashed to the telegraph office ami notified Portage City to clear ti e track of all trains. Then he called for the superintendent of the life saving station at that point. He said to him : "I place at your disposal a loco motive and a car for your life boat The track is 'clear ahead of3'ou. come on as soon as you can got your men and boat ready. Twen ty-four lives are hanging upon the promptness of your action." The superintendent wa3 as ener getic and plucky a man as it known to the service. The paii of horses belonging to the station were quickly harnessed to the wagon, and the lifeboat placed thereon. The crew then entered the boat, and it was desperateh driven to the railroad station. In the briefest possible lime a box car was run down to the station and the lifeboat and the crew were placed upon it. The engineer, who had received another dispatch from the president of the road by this time to hurry to the full top of his speed, pulled the throttle of the engine wide open and the special train hashed away on its. errand of mercy at a frightful speed. There is no record in the office of the time made by this fast-flying tram beyond the fact that it was the swiftest ever made by a lifesaving crew from any sta tion to a distant point. It is also the longest distance ever traveled by such a crew for such a purpose. The story ends abruptly in a brief chapter which tells that the crew arrived at Marquette before the wrecked vessels had given way and that the captain and his crew saved every one of the tweii-ty-four men who had given up ab solutely all hope, and would have been drowned within the next hour if it bad not been for the action of the-railroad president" and the skill and courage of the crew. Salem, Or., January 31. The houae had no quorum this after noon, baturday, about twenty-five ' members of the house went to Ya- quina on an excursion over the Oregon Pacific and have been un able to return on account of land slides. A special to the States man from Yaquina at 9 o'clock to-night, says:. The legislative party did not get away from here to-dav. There were several slides this morning, but the company put tiOU men at work to-day and the road is now clear to the Summit. The weather is very stormy. The steamer yaquina City has been delayed since Thurs day. A heavy sea has been on the bar for over a week. The storm is reported general along the coast. A train will leave hero at G to-morrow morning, and will probably get to Corvallis in the middle of the afternoon. The party will be taken to Salem on the steamer JBentley which will be held at Corvallis for that purpose. Speaker Gresrg started through on a railroad velocipede this morning for Albanv, an i will probably get to.Salem to-morrow morning. It is quite prowatile that no session of the house will be held to-morrow, notwithstanding the arrival of Speaker Gregg in the morning, as enough will be deed to prevent getting a quorum. Only two or thrue senators are absent. The Effects of Menta" Exhaustion. Maiiy diseases, especially those of thetier vous system, are the products cf daily re newed mental exhaustion.
