Washington Letter. . from our KcsiilirrnrresponJent.) I Washington. D. C. May 9. 1882. This session of Congress so far has been remarkable for its free dom from exciting political dis cussions. It has really been a period of peace, so to speak. A leading Senator remarked to-day in conversation that there had scarcely been a ripple of political antagonism stirred up on the floor of the Senate, and ascribed this re sult to the absence ot three Sena tors who have heretofore been emi nently conspicuous in fomenting discord. One of these, Mr. Conk ling, is no longer a member of tho Senate, and the other two, Sena tors Edmunds and Hill, have been absent most of the time on account of sickness of themselves or their families. Speaking of Senator Hill, tho latest reports as to his condition have been very unfav orable. He is now at Eureka Springs, and his condition is re ported so critical that his friends may anticipate tho worst at any moment. His wound is still un healed, and he can eat no solid food. He is very much depressed, and will s-carcely take the liquid food that his attendants prepare for him. It is stated that his phy sicians hare said there is no hope for his recovery beyond tho mi raculous curea that aro said to have been effected at Eureka Springs. While very much do pressed, .Mr. Hill is represented as being perfectly resigned to the . worsf. Senator Hill i3 a man of distinguished ability, and one of tho leading debaters in the Sen ate, and will be sadly rnis3cd not withstanding tho peculiarity re ferred to above, which is duo to constitutional excitability. There has never lieeu u more' unanimous raid, so to speak, in tho direction of appropriations for pub lic buildings than is being made this session. Bills for the erection of eight of these structures were passod under a suspension of the rulos on Monday last. The amount appropriated fry these bills :s about a million and a half, repre senting, accoidinij to the scale usually applicable to such cases, an ultimate expenditure of some six millions of dollars. And these aro but eight out of the hundred and twenty or thereabouts which await recognition. One or two feeble pioteits ware made against tho summary method in which these bills aro put through, but as nearly every member of the Home has, or expects to have, a. bill for a public building in his pocket, the desire to oblijo those who aro for tunato enough to be recognized by the Speaker rose superior to all considerations of party or of pub lic duty. Mr. Hoi man was about the oaly member who stood boldly up in opposition to all of the ap propriations, and he said it was not so much against tho bills themselves as against the lonr-roll-ing method of putting them through. Ho thought there ought to be some demand for the build! ings indorsed by a committee and the Soeretarv of the Treasurv. Tho buildings voted are: One in Detroit, -$600,000; one in Denver, 300,000; ono in Jackson, Tent!., SC,000; onein Council Bluff, 100, OOOjono in Peoria, Ills., 8100,000; and others in Lynchburg, Va., Galveston, Texas, and Greensboro, N. C, the first costing 100,000 and the other two 850,000 each. The point of tho thing is that thoro is very little use fur Government buildings in most of these places. The second postponement of the. Star-route trials to await the appearance of John W. Dorsey, r is anotner evidence oi me desire of tho defendants to delay the prosecution as much as possible. When the' were first charged with fraud, it will be remembered they clamorod loudly for trial, urging that it was working them a great injustice for the Government SHxt linilvi sttreitm. 1 in the' allow them to be tried newspapers ami .take no steps , tjoward substantiating t',ie charges it had made. Bat sin Ce thev have ' ore" indicted, and tr,e prosecution has been bejrnn, th eir tactics have i j.--. . ....-, it-ij, UHU 111,111 only anxiety sea'ais to be to throw as many obstar -les as possible in the way of a speedy trial. This is a strong indication that they are afraid to m&et the evidence against j them The Government is mbv-1 ing vigorously, however, and they will soon be unable to practice nay further evasions. To one who is familiar with the details of the charge this, dilatoriness is a strong proof that the prosecution has a good case. It was at first believed by many here who were acquainted with Gen. Brady that, while he had tho opportunity to practice tho frauds charged upon him, and might not lack the willingness to cngago in them, it was extremely unlikely that a man of his ability should not have covered up his tracks so carefully that conviction would bo impossible oven were the charges entirely correct. But this systematic course of delay and evasion by every means avail able has considerably shaken this belief and brought a tendency to ward the opinion that he will not be able to escape the justice of the law. His conviction, of course, carries with it, in all likelihood, tho conviction of all the rest con nected with him. Spot. Tui: Mexican Central Railway is making rapid progress in two directions.
