Good time. Pf03idont Aurthur signod the Anti-Chinoae bill last Monday. Walk Walla thinks it ouht to have a fruit and vegetable cannpry. Why not! Potatoes are h ceuts a pound in East Portland. Now potatoes aio 8 cents a pound here. The Portlaud Tug company has organized; II. V. Corbett, preihleut; W. E. Sib'on, secretary. One hundred and thirteeu bush els of barley were lately thrashed from one acre of ground m Kittitas Valley. The Chicago Jiifer-OsetiiJ head a column ofitcnn "Frets and Opinion3." That is to shot? that its opinions differ from the facti. Tiie ladit'3 of the Rre.sbytcii.-in church will give a sociable at tho house of Mrs. P. Sherman next Friday ovening. The Grand Lodgo of I. O. O. F. meets in Silent next Tuesday. Wo havo not been abV to timl nut who trero elected delegates from thi place. There is a man over in Umatilla county who didn't Know Le had re ceived a nomination tdl he saw it in the paper. How lonesome h must feel! A now Senate bill saj-3 that no vessel outward bound "shall be com- pollcdtopay pilotage." Porhaps thoy are to bo compelled to pay voluntary pilotage 2,100 Chinamen arrived at Vic toria last Monday. Chinoso steamers are daily arriving at San Francisco. There is also a small ileot en route for the Columbia. General Anderson, of Now York, tho chief engineer of the N. P. R. R., was a passonger on the Columbia. He goes along the line of tho road on a tour of inspection. The church at Port Townsend is tho farthest north and west of any te ligious edifice in the .United States. Tho samo may bo said of any of that town's public institutions. We received tho 'heft" of our San Francisco and eastern mail upon tho arrival of tho Hay ward from Port land yesterday. It's uuploasant, but "what are you going to do about it?" We are in receipt of somo flowers from Canby, thu ro3iilt of the iikillful gardening of Mr. Block. The pansie3 aro from Buda-Pe3th, Hungary, a rare varioty, and are, we beliovo, tho truly specimens of tho kind in tho vicinity. H. J. Hanson, of Fort Canby, tells us that last Sunday night a shock of earthquake was experienced at 11:50 and again tho samo night at 12:35. It may be that thoro will bo a regular Sunday shake-up as n upplc montjto the day's devotions.. Tho Portlaud Standard is pub lishing tho names of candidates alleged to belong to a secret organization which is opposed to every one using his own opinion in matters of religious worship. If it is true they ought all b8 elected to stay at homo. For tho small sum of five cents anyono wishing a steel engraving of President Garfield can get one from Postmaster Chance. The likeness is a good one, and tho work, dono in the highest stylo of tho art, is ond.tr'ed a3 being authentic by the United States government. The pat ty papers throughout the state aro busily engaged in demon strating the peculiar unfitness of tho candidates who aro not on tho ticket they advocate. It seems to be a war of negatives, in which denial and re crimination take tho lead. The Game Iav7. Sections 1 and 3 of the enactment of 1874, approved October 10th, read as follews: Section- 1. That it shall be unlaw ful for any person or persons hereafter to take, kiil, injure or offer for sale, any deer, moose, elk, antelope or mountain sheep dining tho months of February, March, April, May, June, July and August of each year, under the penalty of twenty dollars for the first offense and double that sum for each succeeding offense, to be recov ered as hereinafter provided. .Section" U. That it shall be unlaw ful for any person or persons to take, kill or destroy any elk or deer at any time, for tho sole purpose of obtaining the horns, hide or hams of the same, and tho person or persons so offending shall be fined a sum not les than twenty dollars fur each offense. Theso provisions do not prevent a man from killing amc fur his own consumption. Idiosyncrasies of Information Xcwa peculi iritics m iy b thus de scribed. The newspaper newscrather ersoon disco era that from Oregon always coinos the unexpected; from California, the inevitable; from Ari zona, the bloody; from Utah, tho lecherous and 1 imentable; from New Mexico, tho fearful and fabulous; from Tea3, the diabolical and buco lical; from Colorado, the curious and spurious; from Xevad.1, the chcorful and truthful; from Idaho, tho windy and wanton; from Montana, the won derful and thunderful; from Alaska, the furious and frigid, the oily nnd rigid; from Knnsa3, the boiiuc and bumptious, the hellish and sciump tiomf from Nebraska, the cyclonic and demonic, the fiendish and frolic some; from tho Weil, tho beauti ful and dutiful, the rauc irons and can tankerous tho worst and the best; from the South, llouils and drouth, the caney. the cotlency, and all that mc3iis monotony; fr; Nov. England the cranky charaetriUtio of itl'.-ction fur Mongolians. - The editor of the Walla Walla Watchman cm forward tilth the hygienic statement tint cold lunch will not produe-i dyspepsia. Whatever tends to brighten the domestic lwrizi'ii is to bo cncoiu.igud, nnd tho man who stumbles over tho uash-boiler and clothc-s-wiingpr b cat his cn!d victuals on wash day should feel as if oiie cf life's inoat cirking cares had been lifted from his shoulders -or stomach. Tho hmriblo asnssinttton of Cav endish and Burke still engros-03 the attention of the civilized world. Mes- w.iios of condolence have Iwun scut from every part of tho globe, and the Irish Land League offers a lare re ward for the apprbheustou of the mur derer?. Ths leiuers of that move ment claim tint thu erimu was com mitted at tho instigation of thoss op posed to their efforts. Perhaps nothing better exempli fies Astoria's growth and progress more than the increasing number of fine horses and teams than are now on the sticets. Tho upper Astoria pas senger companies have put on fine new coaches, our merchants aro get ting up tasteful trucks and deiery wagon3 and the horses that draw them afford pleasant contrast t the sorrv looking nags that plodded along in days of yore. Sometimes in our Police R-p irt proceedings wo publish an item thus "John Dee ibusivo langinge, etc. Now it doesn t make a bit of difference to us what his nauu is; if ho gets into trouble and is hiutcil up, his name goes in whoever he is, as probably somo have found out by this time; but if a man giv.s in his mine to the police judge as ''.lohu Dee," and we find it so entuivl on the dock et of tho day's proceedings wo pub lish it verbitim, and do not eon-iider it necessary to chasa the judge up and down the street to find out if that was the man's name or not. There's no going behind tho returns and tho report we publish is an exict trans cript of the proceedings. Tho Walla Walia Watchman says if it happans to "say anything nice or favorable'"' of tho O. R. & N. Co., it loses from five to ten subscribers. That is a bid state of affairs and one that should not exbt. A newspaper to have anything like eomfort should bo able to say just what it considers to bo right, and bo thoioughly inde pendent at all ttmoa. Unfortunately if n newspaper "ets to bo susnected of prostituting its column to an iuflumi tial party it incurs deserved odium and loses all influence. We do not beliovo this to lie the Mate of affairs in the caso o; our Walla Walla eon - , .. , tetnporary for it ts always fair and ju3t and for that reason ought to ro- ceivo bettor trwitment at the hands ofits patrons but the,, must exist somo reason for such lack of credenco on the part of its patrons. Card of Thanlrs. I take this method of thanking A. Laidot, of Jno. Hunio'a boat No. 4, for hi3 gallant assistance in saving tho live3 of two men on the occasion of the upsetting of my boat last Sunday night; and also to tho men who helped get tho boat off yesterday. Martin Foaed. J. Rail's "Undo Tom's Cabin" will play here on Friday nnd Satur day, June 2nd and 3rd. At the last meeting of :ho Port land Board of Trade D. P. Thompson, of a special committee to petition he legislatute to empower the city to levy a tax for the purpose of inipiovius the Columbia lher. asked for further time. He said that upon taking coun sel, there was somo doubt expressed a3 to the ability of the legislature to grant sneh power, as,, the Bulk to be done would be outside of the state. Tho oxqniito Hood engravings m Harper's and the Century magazine have been emulated in delicacy of finish and beauty of design in a book lately recoiled, entitled "Piclotcsque B. & O." It is a superbly illustrated desciiption of tho Baltimore and Ohio railroad, and viewed as a work of art is incomparably supetior .to anything in the way of railroad ad vertising over beforo attempted. Cattle buyers from the east have been at wotk in eastern Oregon, says' The Dalles Times, and have purchas ed all the stock in the region Of Camp creek, Waco county. Lang & Ryan, of Choyenno, haxc. purchased 20,000 head of cattle and oOO head of hoises for tho use of their vaqiioro-..
