This facet is one leg of a “three-legged stool” that eco- nomic development move- ments target. The three targeted areas are to recruit companies to move to the area, retain and expand existing businesses and bring in entrepreneurs and innova- tion. “I came out here and talked with the city, LCC and Cal Applebee at the chamber. I said, ‘Look, this is the right time for economic develop- ment in Florence.’ Economic development is a goal of the city, particularly the third leg of the stool,” Cummings said. Reynolds said, “While we are very caring about our existing businesses ... this is really looking at how we can grow and encourage a new way of thinking.” Cummings wants to sup- port young entrepreneurs, who are coming into ideas as they graduate high school or college, and what she calls “encore entrepreneurs,” or people who want to start their own business after earlier careers have ended. Grant * from 1A from 1A “The program will operate as a ‘last dollar’ program,” Pierson explained. “What community colleges like LCC prefer is a ‘first dollar’ pro- gram. We would like to know that if a student shows up at our door and they have the Oregon Promise grant, then Member FDIC At the Call of Interest, refreshments will be served while RAIN presents on the resources it will bring to “Startup Florence Coast.” Existing startup companies and entrepreneurs will deliver pitches, investors will explain processes and what they look for, and Cummings will dis- cuss ways to support these up-and-coming business ideas. “As entrepreneurs, we’re not joiners. We’re working on what we’re working on with our heads down. Entrepre- neurs are the risk-takers. If it were easy, everybody would do it. But it’s not. It’s hard — on families, on everybody. We’re here to help alleviate some of that stress for you. ... If you get help, get mentors, your chances of success increase by 80 percent,” she said. If you have an innovative design or business, want to support area startup compa- nies, would like to invest or would like to know more, reg- ister for the event at www.ci.florence.or.us. __________ Follow Chantelle on Twitter @SNews_Chantelle. LCC would package financial aid to be able to meet the rest of their need. “But with this program, we have to first figure out how much financial aid the student can get and then if there is any need left, this program could kick in.” Pierson said high school seniors should submit an application for financial aid as soon as possible. The longer a student waits, the fewer funds will be available. “The program originally was to be capped at $10 mil- lion statewide,” Pierson said. “But now we understand that there is no firm cap. It will be open for applications from November 2015 to March 2016.” For more information, high school seniors interested in the program should go to the www.OregonPromise.org website. They can also con- tact the financial aid depart- ment of LCC or the college they are considering and the financial aid office at their high school. This program only applies to the 17 community colleges in Oregon. __________ Follow Jack on Twitter @SNews_Jack. Email him at jack@thesiuslawnews.com. Police from 1A Any valuables left in the vehicle should be stored out of sight. This practice should be followed not only when parking in public areas, but also in residential neighbor- hoods. Police warn that taking precaution is not just about protecting valuables, either — it is about staying safe. “Trust your instincts. If something doesn’t seem right, drive on, move on, get somewhere safe,” Pitcher said. The city and police want to prevent these “opportunity” crimes, especially when a locked door can make the dif- ference. __________ Proud to be part of Team Florence.
