A4 AN ACTIVE RESPONSE Lane County Sheriff’s Office presents ALICE safety training to Mapleton School District B Y C HANTELLE M EYER Siuslaw News S ergeant Aaron Hoberg, with the Lane County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO), spent time Wednesday, Oct. 7, discussing options for safety with Mapleton School District students. Mapleton Superintendent Jodi O’Mara accompanied Hoberg to classes from kindergarten through 12th grade. “This day was planned prior to the events at UCC,” O’Mara said, referencing last week’s fatal shooting at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg. “In light of those recent events, ... we’re looking at what schools in our area are doing to help keep kids and staff safe from any active threat.” Hoberg discussed the importance of training using a more active approach. “We don’t just want to do a lockdown like we used to do before, and shut the lights off, lock the door and go in the corner or get under our desk,” he said. S IUSLAW N EWS 125 TH Y EAR ❘ I SSUE N O . 81 C OPYRIGHT 2015 CYAN MAGENTA YELLOW BLACK L ane Community College (LCC) Florence joined other community colleges around the nation in a solidarity effort Thursday at 11 a.m. to memorialize last week’s tragic shooting at Umpqua Community College (UCC) in Roseburg. According to LCC Florence Interim Director Russ Pierson, LCC and UCC have a strong relationship and are sister colleges. LCC President Mary Spilde has been in Roseburg for the week. In a letter to faculty and staff, she said, “Stop for a moment to remember the victims and their families.” More than 1,130 community colleges participated in the minute-long moment of silence. Pierson said, “I have felt here in Florence that there is a similar size and spirit to our two communities.”
