4 B SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 2015 Viks from 1B After denying the Billies a conversion, the Vikings went to work and so did the Siuslaw pep band, whose high-energy music filled the stadium and echoed across the field so much that Pleasant Hill was forced to call a timeout on one of its possessions — using the break to compose itself and complain to officials. Entering the second period down by six, the Vikings held the Billies’ offense at bay before tak- ing a 7-6 lead late in the quarter on a 32-yard TD pass from senior Preston Mitchell to senior wide receiver Scott Gordon. Kenny Thrall made good on the PAT, putting the Viks back on defense with four minutes remaining in the half. The Billies began another drive that brought them to Siuslaw’s 1-yard line. On the next play, senior linebacker Marshall Teter scooped up a Pleasant Hill fumble, returning the ball to the Viks’ 14-yard line. From there, Siuslaw was able to run out the clock and preserve a narrow 1-point lead heading into the half. “We really settled down after that first Pleasant Hill score and our defense stepped up, which I was glad to see,” said Siuslaw coach Tim Dodson. “That stop on the goal line, and one we had ear- lier in the half inside our own 15, were huge.” The second half was all Siuslaw, which posted 222 total yards of offense to the Billies’ 83 in the last two quarters. The Viks were the first to receive, mount- ing a 10-play drive that chewed up 63 yards to get Thrall within field goal range on a 25-yarder that put the Viks ahead 10-6. Pleasant Hill never really threatened in the second half, with Thrall and Clawson each breaching the end zone on 1-yard carries for the final score, 24-6. “We were a little nervous at first when they came out and scored so fast,” said Gordon, who has scored in each of Siuslaw’s first two games of the season. “But we came back and made a couple of big stops that got our confidence back. After that, we just played to our potential.” Mitchell had 129 yards on 16 carries. From the pocket, Mitchell threw for 111 yards. Thrall had 87 yards on 12 carries, including a touchdown. Gordon led recep- tions with 108 yards on eight catches, including a 32-yard TD reception. Friday, the Vikings will be on the road for their final nonleague matchup of the preseason, taking on the Mustangs of Hidden Valley at Grants Pass. The No. 3-ranked Mustangs have already defeated Far West teams Brookings (24-7) and Douglas (34-18). Daryl is still very much a puppy at heart and will benefi t greatly from some basic obedience training and socialization skills. He loves to play but is just too rough for cats and other small pets at this point. Daryl would be a great running, walking or hiking partner!
