4 B SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, MAY 27, 2015 B OOSTERS , VOLUNTEERS PLANT WIND BREAK COURTESY PHOTO The Siuslaw Athletic Booster Club had many volunteers helping plant trees as a wind barrier around the Siuslaw High School stadium field. The long-awaited project went quickly with the assistance of the school district maintenance crew, Laurel Bay Gardens, Central Coast Disposal, Jim Archer and others. The SABC donated approximately $2,000 to complete the project. Fishing from 1B can be productive during the spring months as lake tempera- tures start to rise and fish begin spawning. Anglers will start finding more fish up in the shallows over the next month. Trout stocking continues The rainbow trout stocking program is in full swing and most water bodies have been stocked recently or will be soon again. Most areas will be stocked multiple times until early June. Be sure to check out the 2015 trout stocking schedule for the most up to date information. SIUSLAW RIVER: Steelhead The river, above tidewater, is closed to all fishing until May 23 when cutthroat trout season opens. ALSEA RIVER: Steelhead The river is closed to all fishing as of May 1 and will reopen with the cutthroat trout season beginning May 23. SALMON RIVER: The river is closed to fishing until May 23, when it opens for cutthroat trout. SILETZ RIVER: Steelhead Steelhead fishing is slow but should continue to improve on a weekly basis. The winter steelhead run is over with only a few post spawn fish remaining. The summer steelhead run is just getting started with initial signs indicating a decent early run compared to most years. Typical steelhead tactics apply such as side drifting, bobber and jig / bait, or casting spoons or spinners. TENMILE BASIN: Trout, largemouth bass, yellow perch Trout fishing in the streams of the Tenmile Basin opens Saturday, May 23. Tenmile Lakes is open all year for trout and anglers have been catching trout trolling wedding ring spinners tipped with a worm in the main part of Tenmile Lakes. Trolling for trout in the upper arms of the lakes has been a little slower. Bass anglers have been catching several largemouth bass in Tenmile Lakes. Bass can be found this time of the year in shallow water near structure like logs or weed lines. WILSON RIVER: Steelhead, Chinook Summer steelhead fishing should be slow to fair. Fish will be holding in deeper holes as flows are low. Use lighter gear in the clear water. Spring Chinook fishing is slow but should improve over the next few weeks. Concentrate on deeper holes in the lower river. YAQUINA RIVER: Steelhead The river is closed to all fishing and will reopen on May 23 with the cutthroat trout season opener. COOS RIVER BASIN: Dungeness crab, bay clams, rockfish, trout Trout season in Coos Basin rivers and streams opens Saturday, May 23. Anglers have been catching a few rockfish inside lower Coos Bay around the jetties. The best fishing has been around the slack tides. The marine fish daily bag limit (which includes fishing in estuaries) is 7 fish and a sepa- rate daily limit for lingcod (two). Anglers will be able to keep only 3 blue rockfish and 1 canary rockfish as part of their daily limit and there will be no harvest of China, quill- back or copper rockfish. UMPQUA RIVER, SOUTH: The South Umpqua is closed to all fishing WINCHESTER BAY: Bottomfish, perch Fishing for bottomfish in the Triangle and South jetty has been successful. It was report- ed that striped perch were caught along the jetty and they were of good size. Crabbing has picking up with some lim- its reported.. PACIFIC OCEAN AND BEACHES: Bottomfish, of fish being caught, but fish- ing should improve with con- ditions. The next open days will be May 28-30, June 11-13, and June 25-27. The nearshore hal- ibut season does not open until July 1. Fishing for bottom fish is restricted to inside the 30 fath- om curve. Fishing for black rockfish has been decent. The marine fish daily bag limit is seven fish and a separate daily limit for 2 lingcod. Anglers can only keep 3 blue rockfish and 1 canary rockfish as part of their daily limit and there will be no harvest of China, quillback, or copper rockfish. Retention of cabezon is not allowed until June 30. S ALMON This season is open for all salmon except coho salmon, with a bag limit of two salmon per day, and minimum sizes for Chinook salmon at 24 inches or larger, and steelhead at 20 inches or larger. Anglers are restricted to no more than two single-point barbless hooks when fishing for salmon and when fishing for any other species if a salmon is on board the vessel. P ACIFIC H ALIBUT The Central Coast Subarea nearshore fishery opens July 1. salmon, Dungeness crab, surf perch The ocean is open for har- vest of Dungeness crab. Anglers continue to catch a few surf perch from the beach- es near Winchester, Bandon and Coos Bay. The best fishing is usually on the incoming tide. Sand shrimp is one of the best baits to use when fishing for surf perch. The season is open for all salmon except coho salmon, with a bag limit of two salmon per day, and a minimum size for Chinook salmon at 24 inches or larger.
