Ruth grew up in Minneapolis, Minn., and graduated Ruth Almerico high school in 1942. She married Donald Poindexter and moved to Bakersfield, Calif., where she raised her first two boys, Don and Ron. After divorcing, she moved to Fresno, Calif., where she met John Almerico at a Catholic Social Club dance in Bakersfield. They married on June 30, 1960. Together, they moved to John’s hometown, San Francisco, Calif., and had three children: John Paul and twins, James and Jacqueline. Ruth was a homemaker and volunteered her time with the Mothers of Twins Club and various activities in the St. Monica Parish Church and School. As her children grew up, she began a second career with the California DMV, where she worked until retire- ment in 1984. Ruth enjoyed traveling with her husband and family. In the course of her life, she visited all 50 states, Canada, Mexico, Ireland, the United Kingdom, Europe, Greece, Turkey, Morocco and China. She was an avid bridge play- er who joined in and organized regular card groups throughout retirement in Folsom, Calif., COURTS and later Florence. Above all, Ruth enjoyed life and held onto a positive out- look throughout her life. Her memorial wish was to be hon- ored with a wake in the Irish tradition — to be remembered with laughter, not tears. Save lives with legible address Responders with the Western Lane Ambulance Dis- trict (WLAD) have recently responded to several 911 calls where it was difficult to locate the residences. Many homes in the rural areas of the county have long driveways, or obstructing objects such as brush or trees, that can make it diff- icult for responding emergency crews to locate the correct residence because the address numbers posted on the houses aren’t visible from the road. WLAD medics have exten- sive district familiarization, and the ambulances are equipped with current mapping books and GPS sys- tems. But without having a clearly visible address from the road- way, it may still be difficult to ascertain which residence is home to the 911 caller. WLAD asks all residents in the district, which includes 1,050 square miles of Western Lane County, to make efforts to have a visible address mark- er next to the roadway. Minutes are critical in med- ical emergencies, so it is imperative that every home in the district has a clear and visi- ble address. For many years, Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue has been offering a rural address- ing program to assist residents with providing visible address- es for necessary emergency responses in any type of emer- gency. This is also a great option for residents to receive assis- tance in establishing proper address postings. For more information, con- tact SVFR by calling 541-997- 3212. FSC gourmet dinner winner announced Florence Mayor Joe Henry picked the winning ticket for the Senior Center’s dinner raf- fle on St. Patrick’s Day. It actually took three tries to get a winner. Nancy Coughlan was the first ticket drawn but she declined since she is a board member. Ron Borge, also a board member whose ticket was drawn, declined as well. The third attempt drew the name of winning ticket holder Bonnie Kunsek. “We are delighted that Bonnie’s name was selected,” said Senior Center board presi- dent Christine May. “She is a long-time volunteer at the cen- ter and single-handedly man- aged our spring fashion shows in the past.” Now Kunsek has to choose nine other people to join her for the gourmet five-course meal, which will feature prime rib prepared by Chef Larry Osgood. The gala feast will be held after hours at the center on a date chosen by Kunsek and Osgood.
