CHICKEN RAISING. By Rer. E. P. Warren. Is there money In ttie poultry busi ness? Yes end no. Thii, like every other enterprise depends on how run. Many people have been in it to their Borrow. Don't undertake it blindly. You might sav, eggs are always in de mand at good prices and ne danger of overstocking the market. Fowl are ready sale at any time of theyear, there fore there is money in the business. The intention of the fowl is to pick u the waste around the premises, and like ppoplf, they need some room., plenty of fresh sir, and an abundance ot pure, clean water. When shot up in close quarters they become diseased, more exneneive and less profitable. I know numbers of persons who have gone to the business bv putting money into extensive buildings, incubators and blooded .stock. In a short time they were out and dixgueted with themse.ves and the whole thing. This scribe speaks somewhat from ex' perience. My advice is don't pinnae into it on a large scale at first, or depen on it solely for livlihood, but take on as a side issue. Give plenty of room, fresh water, trreen feed, altalfa in winter corn along with wheat, occasionally oats The above is for laving bens. The common kinds are profitable as any for et:8. I prefer the White Leghorn for laving, and the Plymouth Rock for table use. Keep a few blooded fowls from which to raise and replenish your stock If you w.sh to raise fowls for the market use an incubator. Hatch any time of the year. Have a good warm place for your young birds. Keep young turkeys on a dry floor lor a month or more and then you will have no trouble in raising them. Ducks can be successfully grown by keepiog up in close pens on dry srnund. Turn them out late in the afternoon for a little exercise, but shut up at night. They only need water for drinking purposes. Build cheap, but comfortable houses. Keep thoroughly clean. Whitewash perches often with lime to keep off vermin and disease. Don't keep old fowls for laying, or al low them to get too fat. Have sheds with plenty of straw for exercise in winter. Scatter grain and let them scratch. Give crushed bone, coarse and or gravel. Remember chickens especially need a great deal of attention and care. There is money in it. School Notes. By 8. E. NOTSON, Co. Bupt. On the 8th inst., I yisited the school in District No. 8. Mr. E. H. Hedrict teaches here. The pupils were very orderly and attentive to their work, and all semed to be making good progress. I noted some exce.Ient work in phonics. There is some talk of a new schoolliouse in this district. The next day I visited the school in Joint District No. 39, where I found Mr G.R. Hofi and eight pupils making good use of the time. Since my former visit, new porch has been built aod the grounds surrounded by a good woven wire fence. Each window is provided with a board for ventilation. This school has been giving some attention to debating. The teacher and pupils bave also taken an- active part in the literary society which meets at the echoolhouse. The day following, I visited the school at Castle Rook. Prof. J. A. Gibbons is in charge of this school. This school bas tbe best library to be found in . any rural school in tbe county, An excel! ent sectional bookcase is provided for the books. On the walls are found several neatly framed pictures, among them a picture of Washington and the pictures of tbe three martyr presidents. Tbe windows are provided with new shades. The outbuildings are exoellent and are kept in first class condition The pupils seemed to be taking a lively interest in their work. SVNH0NI.
