Heavy Stock Sales. Christian Church. The order of Hervices at the Christian church ill b chanced The Week's NevAs Burns, Or., Dec. 3. The stockmen of Harney County have been sellinc oft their stock fast this fall. The ilarney Stock Company has sold 1(1. 0i)0 head and the Pacific Livestook Comnanv ham sold several thousand, besides what the small owners have disposed of, miking a total of 30,000. Then have been several thousand liead of sheet) sold in the Stein Moun tain country owing to the shortage of ranee. Cattle have brought a :fiood price, an average of 225 per head. Horses and sheep have com mnded a Kood price all during 1909. The stocK industry in Harney County has been a profitable business the past three years, but as the country settles up and the big ranches are out up in small tracts the big stock owners will soon be restricted and fiom-J of them show they are realizing that fact by selling off their stock nd land holdings. When stockmen are fenced off the free sovernment laud and besin ranging their stock on their own land or renting pasture the pi o fits in owning large herds have about seen their best days. There is verv little free range left in Harney County compared with what there has been and the land hunters are .grabbing that fast. Stein Mountain affords the best range left iu Harney County, but this year it was greately overstocKed by the sheen owners, which caused considerable trouble over range. Prizes for Fine Cattle. The Northwest is vitally interested In the tariff matters that will be (taken up at the National Capital this winter. It is understood that the customs schedules affecting Canada will be revised. The latest tariff act authorizes the'President to apply maximum and minimum rates, where ever he finds discrimination against American wares. Heretofore. Canada has been one of our best customers. but recent asta indicate that some of the business is to be cat off. According!?, a plan is said to be under consideration at-Washington, D. C. , which will apprise Ottawa that repressive measures will not be tolerate 1. People of the Northwest believe that steps should be taken to bring about more equitable trade relations with Canada and the hope is expressed that no break will be permitted by the government. James A. Wood writing in the December issue of Pacific Northwest Commerce, the official publication of the Seattle Chamber of Commerce, on "Secretary Bal linger and the Fight Against Him," points out some of the mistakes which have been made liv those attacking President Taft's cabinet adviaer. Reeret is expressed tliat, Collier's Weekly has not seen fit to present the facts in the case, which needs no defense, when viewed from an imDartial standpoint. Mr. Wood's article exhibits a snlendid spirit, in that it lacks the vindictive ness thit has characterized all of the assaults on Secretary Ballinger. In this, it is far more convinaintr than anything that ha? been written on either side of the so called Ballinger Finshot contro versy. lire Stallion for Sale.
