EXACT COPY OF WRAPPER. G-atting Ready Fop a Fresh Start. Gwendolyn de Courteuay, the hand some society favorite, was nervously agitated. Even a blind baggage car could see that. She paced up and down in front of the large cheval glass in her room. Evidently she was greatly aggrieved over something. Finally her high strung nerves got churned np to such a pitch that she lost control over herself and began to clutch and tear wildly at her hair, pull ing it out in large nandfuls. Your sympathetic nature is around and you cry: "The poor woman is tem porarily insane. Why doesn't some one stop her before she does herself bodily injury? She must be in terrible mental agony to stand the pain of pulling her hair out by the roots." But hist! Be not too lavish with your sympathy, friend. Up to now Gwendolyn has pulled off only four teen pounds of puffs, three miles of interlocking switches and a few de tachable curls. She has some distance to go yet before she touches the real, cross your heart hair. Gwendolyn is merely distracted because her maid cannot get her floating hirsute equip ment on in becoming array. She is simply getting ready for a fresh start. -Puck. Active at 87. Rothschild's Play. Baron Henri de Rothschild was once involved In an amusing incident, in which a well known Parisian theat rical manager took part. The baron of fered him a play, which he practically accepted without looking at. "Yes, my dear baron," he said, "of course I'll produce it, and I am very flattered you should have brought it to me first. "Yes, but you must read it," Insist ed the baron, "for it may not suit you. I am not at all sure that It will. will come again tomorrow, when you will have had time to look over it." "All right, do," answered the man ager. Next day, when the baron presented himself, he was received with cuthusl asm. "It's a masterpiece, my dear baron a masterpiece. I shall be de lighted to produce it, and as soon as possible. We'll have it next season. On the manager's desk lay the roll of paper Baron de Rothschild had brought the previous day. He picked It up, unrolled it and showed it to the manager. All the pages were blank. His Longest Engagement. At the Army and Navy club in Washington one evening a group of of ficers, most of them young men, were swapping stories of various engage ments during the war with Spain and the subsequent troubles in the Philip pines. Among the silent listeners was one grizzled veteran, a naval commander of national renown. It must have oc curred to one of the young men that it was peculiarly ludicrous that offi cera not long out of the academies should be holding forth with respect to their exploits while this old fellow sat silent In a corner. So, turning to the veteran, one of the young officers blithely asked: "What was the longest engagement you ever participated in, admiral?" "It lasted three years," said the old chap, without a suspicion of a smile, "and, worst of all, the young woman married another man." Washington Star. For Two Years. "For two years after I was married I was ashamed to meet the preacher who united my wife and me in the holy bonds. Y'ou see, in my excited condition I made a blunder and gave him a five dollar bill Instead of $20, which I Intended to hand him. I sup pose he thought I was a cheap skate, but I couldn't very well explain It without making myself ridiculous or causing him to suspect that I was ly ing about it." ' You say you felt that way for two years?" "Yes. After that I began to be sorry I had given him anything.'" Philadel phia Record. Proposals Invited. When the New Yoaic Ledger was wavering on the brink of fnMure Rob ert BonnerV the proprietor, sent to the Now York Herald a brief advertise ment, to be set up In a single line. So (iiveleyt'siiuo whs Mr. Bonner's handwriting that the mlvortlxlng man nger Interpreted the direct Ions as or dering that the copy i'e run hi full page, which Instructions he obeyed, though marveling greatly. The Herald came out the next morning with one whole page devoted to the crisp ad juration to read the Ledger's new story. The effect upon Mr. Bonner was almost fatal, first from chagrin at the thought of the possible bill, then from amazement subscriptions be gan to pour In and finally from sat isfaction as they continued to flood the office until the fortune of the pub lication was made. The novel though accidental device had struck the pub lic's fancy. Mr. Bonner was hailed as the pioneer of n new and daring the ory of exploitation, and the advertise ment gained tenfold currency by being commented upon as a feature of the news. Collier's. Trumpeting Ancient German Chorals. The most notable ornament of Roth enburg Is the rathhaus, which no art ist who visits the town fails to sketch. It Is of a most Imposing beauty, con sisting of an older gothic building dating back to the middle of the thir teenth century, with an elaborate re naissance facade. . It was from its darkling dungeons that many of the instruments of torture In the museum at Nuremberg came, 'for Rothenburg was not tender In Its treatment of prisoners. The earlier building has a high square tower crowned with a boll cupola, where thrice a week the choir of St. Jakob's, a reverend church lying within its shadow, painfully climbs, armed with trumpets and other mu sical instruments. The sweet Lutheran chorale is repeated four times as the musicians respectively face the four points of the compass, and the cere mony, so In keeping with the quaint, old time life of the town, is one of the visitor's unforgettable memories of Rothenburg.
