Oregon Apples In China. Ernest Vollmer, Py Vice-Council Tttinntau. China. American app'es, especially those oU Oifjron; hi 9 favorably known here. Some dea'ers in $hant:hai make a regular business of iaiporting thorn, anil a Tiiinctnu firm has a stanilinR order with the Shanghai house. The apples a-ehyfar tho best that come to this country; thev sell well, and their keep ing qualities leave nothing to ho desired. Aside from oranges, lemons, a iw apples it is hardly probable that any other fruit could be sent across the Pacific and find a ready market, hut if expurlers would make connec ions with Shanghai jobbers or commission man it ia absolutely certain that a large and growing trade could be worked up All of the American tinned fruits are to be found here and command a ready eale The two largest hotels in Tsing- tan each have a course of California fruit every noon and evening which is nndoubte ly the most popular number on the bill of fare. Peaches, pears and fall apples grow well locally and are shipped extensively to other parts of China, but there are no canneries, aod fan ilies do not seem to preserve fruit to the extent they do in America. The re tultisihata great deal of the Amer ican goods are used ; everybody knows them, and they are universally admit ted to be the best to be had. Prices are ON THE FARM. HOW NATURE PROVIDES FOR US. The most independent man on earth is the farmer, for he makes the earth yield him almost everything needed for life. He knows that as he sows so will he reap. He usually keeps strong and healthy from constant strife with Nature in sunshine and in pure air. At night when work is done, he finds most refresh ing sleep, such as only a tired man knows. In the same way that the earth yields food for man, so does it provide remedies for human ills. Thousands of households throughout the farming dis tricts of the United States know the value of Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Dis covery. It is Nature's most valuable and health-giving agnt-made without the use of alcohol. It contains native medl cfnal roots, and is the concentration of Nature's vitality as found in tin Ameri can forests. This remedy has a history which speaks well for it'because it wa given to the public by Dr. R. V. KJerce, founder of the Invalids' Hotel and Surg--,'eti; Institute, at Buffalo, N. Y., nearly forty years ago, !!? nas S,P.?? been soH by druggists in ever increasing cuan- Dr. P!erce found that the bark of the B'ack Cherry-tree, the root ot the Mandrake, Stone root, Queen's root, Sloodroot and Golden Seal root, made into a scientific, non-alcoholic extract by the use of glycerine, made the best altera tive and tonic The refreshing Influence of this extract is at once apparant In the recovered strength of the patient the vital fires of the body burn brighter and theif Increased activity consumes the tissue rubbish which otherwise may poison the system. This alterative and tonic extract has been found to stand alone as a safe, invigorating tonic, as it does not depend on alcohol for a false stimulation, but is Nature' oven method of strengthening and cleansing the sys tem. It tones up the stomach and purifies the blood in Nature's own way. It is well known all over the world as Dr. Pierce' Golden Medical Discovery. The name was given to this vegetable compound because one of the important Ingredients was Golden Seal root 8uch an authority as Dr. Roberts Bartholow. of Jefferson Medical College, says of Golden Seal root, "very useful as a stomachic tonic Cures catarrh of the stomach and headaches accompanying the same." Dr. Grover Coe, in his book Organic Medi cines, speaking of Golden Seal root, says that "as a liver in vigor tor it hai few equals.' Further he says, "in chronic In flammation of the bladder we deem it one of the most reliable agents of cure. As a tonic in the convalescing stages of fevers, Sneumonla, dysentery and other acute iseases Hydrastis (Golden Seal root) is peculiarly appropriate." Dr. Coe continues: "We would here add that nr.r experience has demon started the Hydrastis or Goldenseal root to be a valuable remedy in bronchitis, laryngitis, and other affections of the respiratory organs." Prof. Hobart A. Hare, M. D., University of Pennsylvania, says of Golden Seal : "Of service in chronic catarrh of the stomach and bowels following abuse of alcohol, a tonic after malarial fever. Has a distinct, anti-malarial Influence. Good in all catarrhal conditions, as uterine catarrh, leucorrhea, etc Is a curitive acnt in chronic dyspepsia." Prof. John M. Sciiddtr in Specific Med ication says of Goldenseal: "It stimu-lateethpflitn-stive processes, and increases the assimilation or food. By these means the Moral 1 r-nrichr'l. and this blood feeds the inuscUi-r system. I mention the muscular system because I believe it tirst feels tLe increased power Imparted hy the stimulation of Increased nutri tion. The consequent improvement on the nervous and glandular systems are natural results. "In relation to its general effects on the system, there i no medicine in vne nlntut which there it uch general unan imity of opinion. It is universally re garded as the tonic useful In all de Li liti a ted states." Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescription spe cially put up for woman's ills for those distressing dragging down ailments peculiar to women is also a temperance remedy that is best known by its cures. With Dr. Pierce's medicines their In gredients are matters of public knowledge, being; prints on each separate bottle wrapper. Thus Invalid sufferers are taken into Dr. Pierce's full confidence. Dr. Pierce's great thousand-page illus trated Common Sense Medical Adviser will be sent free, paper-bound, for 21 one cent stamps. or cloth-bound for 31 stamps. Address Dr. R.V. Pierce. Buffalo, N. yT somewhat lower than those in America, where the cost of tinned fruit baa gone up a great deal within the lust two years, seemingly without a corresponding in crease over here. Thounh such n satisfactory statement can be niadu regarding our tinned fruit, j ist the reverse has to be said of our ims. iellies and preserves. It may be that no attempt has been made to sell the goods in any quantity over heie, the cost being perhaps too liitfh. but they are certainly not on the market. Prac tically everybody eats something ci this soit for breakfast, and great quantities of current, blackberry, strawberry, oranca marmohde. and othei p eserves are thus consumed. One might eupose that with the size this industiy lias reached in the United States it would be reasonable to expect at least some American goods, but everything is Fng hsh, with occasionally some Germat goods. If we could succeed in diverting this trade we would gain a market with a grert buying capacity and one which is certainly worth capturing. When it comes to dried fiuits, the American product again makes a better showing, but one which could be easily improved uon. Prunes, apricots, peaohes, pears and other orchard fruits are fo md, but ,they do not bold the dominating position which their quality should insure them. Cottage Grove is going right ahead, holiday or no holiday, says, the Nugget. No one lias Buffered; we are favored with cheerful, solid business men. No serious inconvenience has been experi enced here. Im rovements are the talki of the day. Grading on the new Corvallis & Alsea Kiver railway 1ms been po ing on quite rapidly of late, 13 miles of the Hue are now com pleted. Farmers nronnd La Grande hold hay at!? IS or SI 9 a ton. Agates by the tens of thousands were thrown tip on Agate beach last Thursday and Friday, says the Port Orford Tribune. MBit IjDllii&VJLSU Milton has bright prospects for seour ing spring water for municipal purposes. Some months ago the city pu-chas. d he Bowman springs, a few miles above Mil ton. The water will flow through an 18 inch pipe, which is now being laid by a force of 20 men. About $3,500 hr8 already been expended. Weekly Oregonlan Heppner Gazette.
