This was the banner season for the Hood Kiver strawberry growers, the to tal number of crates marketed being 55,000 or "JO. OX"i over the number shipped last year. The season was perhaps 10 iyg late, but this kept the Hood Kiver competition with the , Missouri and California crops and en abled the growers to realize a better price. Last year the Hood Kiver Fruit growers Union netted its patrons f'J,l: per crate, and the union expects to do almost as well this year. There was a good vie d this vear, and with favorable weather for ripening, a full crop was produced. The berries were generally of an ex cellent vjua'ity, but the local shipping agencies had some t.-ouble this season to keep inferior fruit from going on the market. Some of the new growers, not yet converted to Hood River's ethical code of maiketing only first-class, thor oughiy packed fruit, attempted to sliip inferior b.'rri-8, but the Davidson Fruit Compinv and the F'ruitgtowir' I'nion enforced a stiict vigil ncp, a-d by a system of in-petion endeavored t sp'id "lit nuthini: but H - -t rlas product The tot il area in st'aw her ie i't Taking tbe state all over, pros- rtAta vlptp r.pver FiritrhtfT than rft i t ... - . : liJ acre, sec O present.
