A sattantial increase in business create a demand for better carrying facilities. Furnish carried the day in th primary elections in Umatilla county. Judge Ixiwell'a showing was behind the eipectation of bis friends. The Gazette would b pleaded to see an Eastern Oregon man head the ticket and if Furnish can get there he i$ ail right. The playing of billards by students has been prohibited by the State Agricultural college. This is a move that can be en dorsed. No improvement of the mind can come from billiard play ing. A few other college sport could be eliminated with good re. suits. The low passenger rates offered ry the railroads will induce a great many people to come west tLis year. 1500 pt-ople from the Mississippi valley, bound for Ore- con and Washington, came this wek. There is lots of room in the Inland Empire for horaeseek- era. fiom uniou.; There is no valid reason for opposing New Mexico's appeal for statehood, ar.d of course Oklahomawon thp right to ad mission "several years ago, though she is the youngest of the three. ,Ne Mexico hd a- population of about 194,000 iu 1900, ; which ia abont the number required for a representative m congress from the states. She has -been a terri tory for over half a century. Ok lahoma had 398,000 inhabitants in 1900, or enough to entitle her to two votes in the house of repre sentatives, though she has been a territory for ODly a dozen years. Arizona is the smallest of all the territories having only 122.000 population at the time the census was taken two years ago. As her growth in the decade, however, was 105 per cent, the chances are that 6he has in the neighborhood of 130.000 people no. The out loot for all these territories is bright. This is particularly true of Oklahoma. As the silver issue has been shelved for good there will be but little incentive for opposition . to the admission of A company ia now making prep arations to lore for oil at Rotten Spring. n-ar Ileppner Junction. With oil we!l, coal mines, rich gold mine and an immense terri tory of rich agricnltnral and gTax ing Und. the Inland Empire ie certainly a country of great re-onrce". By the call of the cooBty treaa nrer for warrr.nte it will be noticed that Morrow county is now prac tically out of debt While the t uiliiLg cf a new court house will crertt" a dt-bt :n the neighborhood of t2-y.('.'1. '.:: this ia cot a heavy burden in oopariaoo with many other count!. these territories. Partisan reasons ragut model. may sway some votesand this may delay the adojisBion of 60ine pf the three. Oklahoma, even with the new accessions made to her population in 1901. is likely to be carried by the Republicans, though the Democrats have the better chance in bi)th Arizona and New Mexico. Counting four elrctoraJ votes for Oklahoma and three each for the other two terri. tont-e, tbe lernocrats would gain two votes for President by the ad mission of the threa territories, yet this will hardlv be sufficient to give them the election. Lav. ing partisanship aside altogether there is no good reaeon to oppose the admission of any of these ter ritories. St Ivouis Glube Democrat of a real "home" ti)i!aiine. From the beautiful cover, by Mr. W. 1.. Taylor, to the very last ptre it is replete with de liihtful fiction and interesting artk-les. The number open with the unique story of "The exton Who Killed New York Society,'' by William Perrine. ami then come a real treat, another ''I.adv or the Tier" story, by the ame Stockton 1 ho pave n that remarkable tale of mystery. Thi one is called "My Bal loon Hunt." Nellie B'anohan begins a sere of unniiial article about biida and their " personalities," and "The Dominie" tells an amusing story of his journevin?s in Kurope with two roni panions. Then there is the rord in stallment of Miss Tortor's "Those I'ays in Old Virginia," and a pare of pictures of "Pret'y Country Homes from f 400 to $:3'.!00, and many other instructive and interesting articles.
