ROSEBURG REVIEW! FRIDAY, DECEMBER 17, 1886. THREE VESTS A. MILE. J X OTHER FAIL USE. OAK LASH ITEMS. from every section of the stats, and especially from Marion county, come words of approval and encouragement for the Statesman in tie advocacy of the passage of a bill by the next legis lature reducing, and regulating the rate? of railroad freights and fares. From this growing sentiment among the people of every section, it is lik ely that the next legislature will not dare to stem the current of public opinion on this point, but will take some de cided action. The last legislature at it j regular session first considered the bill then passed with the passenger rata fixed at three cents a mile, but, after repeated promises and sugges tions were made that if tha bill would hold water at four cents then a further reduction would be made at the nest session, it passed with the uniform rate fixed at four cents. Now let the rep resentatives of the people hold all terested to their promises. This will be one of the most important pieces of legislation, and there will be no chance The firm of Chase & Ford grocerymen, also they kept candies, cigars and notions, was at tached last Wednesday by Dept. Sheriff Mil ler, and the doors were closed. A. C. Marks and J. C. Sheridan laid the first attachments of about $1500, others will follow. The whole liabilities we were told by one of the firm wil amount to something over $3000, while the assets are valued at $4000. We regret this failure very much as these men were both young, and made promise of a business success. The holiday trade would have saved this wreck they think, but too late now. LEGAL ADVERTISEMENTS in at IMl'OItTAST ORItEll. to dodije the issue. Statesman. Comment Sol Seceaaary. As shown by the President in his message there has been a 1 eduction in the expenses of the government in all departments, except in the pension office, where there has been an increase o nearly 88,000,000. We especially invite the attention of old soldiers to this fact. They were ttfld when Mr. Cleveland was a candidate that if he fchould bo elected no more pensions would be paid. Buthcreis an actual increase of nearly 8,000,000. Com ment not necessary. Albany Democrat. On the 5th day of October 1886 the Secre tary of War furnished the Head Quarters of the Grand Aimy of the Republic with a memoranda of an act of Congress by which it was ordered for the information of all soldiers of the late war of the rebellion, and members of Grand Army of the Republic in particular, to publish to the people of their respective communities that, "at the last session of Congress (act of Angust nth, 1SS6) provision was made for continuing the work of furnish, ing headstones for unmarked graves of soldiers, sailors and marines in city, town and village cemeteries and other burial places; and the War department has accordingly made arrangments for supplying all that may ID- be required to (he 30th day of June 1887." ''Application can be made at any time be fore the 30th day of June next, but it is de sired that they be filed at the earliest date practicable, to enable the Department to sup ply the stones with the first shipment, which will be made early in the ensuing spring." In accordance with the foregoing enact ment, Reno Post No 29 G. A. R. Depart ment of Oregon requests that all who know of any soldier burried in their vicinity in this county, send the names, the letter of the com pany, and number of the Regiment any sol dier may have served, and place of burial to the Commander of Reno Post N029G. A. R. without delay, as it is due to everyone who battled for the maintcnace of his goverment, that his last resting place should be appropri ately marked and designated. Therefore send the names of the deserving soldiers un marked graves to E. G. Hursh Commander of Reno Post No 29 G. A. R. at Roseburg Or. David Baker spent Saturday here. D. $1 K.
