) 4- ROSEBURG: REVIEW FRIDAY, OCTOBER 9, 18S5. "JE'rofi.-Non Back.9' EiMTOBlttvitw. I observe that you quote one of t!ie gveatc-st Ji.vig physi cists, Sir William Thompson, p.s saying, "that men could be thus evolved out of the inferior animals," he looked upon "as the wildest dream of materialism." With your permission I would like to offer a few thoughts on this subject, Evolution set Back. ' What a calamity, who set it back, Sir William Thompson What a mighty bach-setter he must be. : The "holy Inquisition" thought it had . set back the theory of astronomy, vrhen it declared that Galileo's theory of as tronomy was "false in philosophy, and absolutely heretical, because it (the Copernican theory) is expressly contra-' . ry to scripture" and "a detriment to the holy faith," It was a case of opin ion vs opinion. But whose opinion lias stood the crucial test of time and close investigation? Any school boy wiil answer that. It may be Evolution will stand the same test, Sir William Thompson to the contrary notwithstanding. The great physicist says "Evolution is the wildest dream of material'san." It is easy to make sweeping assertions, but to back up an assertiou by good argu ment is more diincult. Evolution is either true or it is false. If true a million Sit William Thompsons could not set it back very. far, and if false a like number of Dar wins could not establish it. E vol uii .m must stand or fall upon its own merits. Bir Wm. T. has a right to his opinion likewise the .Review and when either of you will give us a reason for the hope that is within you no one will listen more gladly, or consider them more carefully than the writer of this. The ago has gone by -when men ac cept a theory upon mora authority of him who offers an opinion though never so learned. The trouble is, theolov is tenck-r to feel and erics ourh at the smallest pressure from the advancing steps ot science, is fearful of the destruction of the holy fait!). But science goes on in her quiet and unostentatious manner, gathering up new truths from the fruitful womb of nature. . Scien e patiently' searches for facts, truth, 'principles'; arranges them iutagroup?, families and orders; ai.a- ,. Vizes and synthetizes; notes the ' difxer '' entiations under natural, accidental or intentional charges of- all forms that come within her observation and the conditions that facilitate or retard evolutionary, processes. Then by in ductivo reasoning deduces a theory to account for the known phenomena un der immutable laws. The differentiation cf the lo;ver pro toplastic life into the higher order of sentient beingis a riddle to some, espec ially to theologians. Theo!ogy com- hats evolution with a zeal not unlike that against astronomy in the clays of Galileo and Bruno. Theology plays upon tho words "differentiations," "pro toplasm" and "the survival of the fltest" with the flippancy of a child with the "words papa and mamma, and as uttle understandingly. But as Sir William Thompson did not tell us nor the lie view inform us of the reasons for his opinion we will await further light from Sir William and the EnviEW, and may the litest survive. Evolutionist. Editor Review: I believe there is no .country in the world that has the recuperative qualities so fully devel oped as Oregon, were you to press tho vitality out of the Xe-.v England States as we have it pressed out of us every 1 year and she would l& as dead as a haddock. I moan that were the New England States to pay in excess for ( her imported goods over her expoited goods sue could not live. Again if she were te pay the high rat of interest for her borrowul money as Oregon she cannot survive a single decade, and tho question with us at this time seems to be how much can we stand and live? If year by year out home manufacture were shrinking and our importations increasing and our indebtedness grow ing larger and larger how long can we stand it? Don't yen think it is about time we were waking up to this qees- tion that is staring us so plainly in the face? I do. C. A. 11 fed. President Cleveland is reported to be in the best of health, wonderfully re-invigorated and more determined than evir to give the country a reform administration. People who advertise oidv once or twice a ear forgft that most ,pecpl cannot remember atytlii: g lonfi- than thirty dav?. Now is the tin:c to suVcribe for the JIeview. A ii'vrd About th Hern ir. We arc gradually making the Be- view wh:t, in our opinion, a news-; paper should be. To collect, and gath er all the nows of the day is the fiete' of tho modern newspaper, but also the discussion of great issues, the solution of new problems and the seeking after thfe welfare of humanity comes in the field of legitimate journalism. And in fact there is much that is called news, i sensational in character and demoral izing in effect, that has no place in a respectable journal. Tua public is quick to know a good thing and to appreciate it. We llatter ourselves tlmt all find in the home-print new dres3 liEVlEW, with its columns of reading mattter open to general dis cussion and piogressive ideas, a vast improvement over the old patent out side of a ear ao. In fact so much patronage is coming to our advertising columns that we will be forced to en large very shortly. We thank our numerous patrons and friends for the interest which they have taken in the success cf the journal and trust that they will be pleased to note the gener- if al improvement from time to time. The Review is a live, aggressive, fear less newspaper, unflinching in its sup port of the right, firm in its denuncia tion of the wror.g, yet with charity for all. Editor Review: 1 have been busily engaged in taking an inventory of gov ernment property since my arrival on the Agency hence hive not written. I am glad to say ' that I find everv bins in a first class condition. Aeent L. M. Nickerson and his faithful band of employee's have dons a great and good wotk among these Indians. I A more faithful and energetic com pan 7 of men and women I don't be lieve can be found on any other Indian Agency on the continent. Ag'-nt Nickerson has broken himself down in this wcrk. His health is in a veiy precarious condition, but he has left a monument in the education, civilization and chi h-ifi-iniznt'iLii of these Indian?, more' enduring than monumental brass. I have been examining with critical ej'o every department of this work, writing, counting, treasuring, and now after completing thia work of receiving and receipting for the entire government property taking formal possession cf tho same, I feel it a duty to say what I have had a better opportunity than any other living man to know, that Agent L. M. Nickerson has conducted tho iithdrs of the Klamath Agency with ability and scrupulous honesty;! aud in retiring to private life he .car ries with him the consciousness that he has done his duty. May the eve ning of his life be serene and peaceful and his end happy. . Joseph Emehv. JuiUan War J'cttrnn-i. Messrs Jas. Burnett, of Round Pi ai lie, I. P. Nickols, of Riddle, and Yvr. G. Editor: After li-.wicr examined the elaljorate diegesis of the mound theory ty youf correspondent, P. A. Moses. 1 can net I . . . . concur with him in his belief and conchu-ion because lie has not explained why geological forces have caused those mounds nor explained the rmure qf those forces. We find that the same natural causes produce the same effect:; under the same circumstances. Therefore it is strange that these mounds do not exi-t in all countries alonj; water courses as in North America.' It appears more obvious that these mounds are the earthly remains of Indian hah tations as they are . accustomed to building their wigwams on or near th.o borders of streams and forming them of a large portion of earth. Where these mounds exist we do not f ml de bris of cities or antKjue relics of civilization, such as exist in otht-r parts of the world where they do not exist. Resides if these mounds existed prior to the existence of the Indians they would not be visible now for the same reasons that ancient cities arc imbed ed in the earth. Therefore-the mounds' that are now visible must be of modern '.formation. Some, and. in fact many of these mounds are cn allu vial deposits of modem formation. L. C. Ilfi.!.. IV P.
