V 1 THE CORVALLIS GAZETTE Published mrmry Turn day mmd Frldmy bythm GAZETTE PUBUSHIKQ CO. 0. A. Dearing, Ed. and Mgr. t : TUESDAY, JANUARY 19, 1904 EDITORIAL COMMENT. S. h. Kline, a prominent mer chant of Corvallis, is registered at the Portland. His name has been mentioned as one of the .. t ; ' r jMauonai commissioners lur iuc Lewis and Clark Fair, says the Portland Oregonian. Among Jail the prominent business men of Central Oregon no man stands higher, or is better qualified lor the position than S. L. Kline, of j this city. The commissioner should be a man of broad views, loval to his state, well informed on public questions, and one who would work heartily lor the best interests of this section. We feel assured that no better ap pointment could be made. We hope to see the matter confirmed at an early date. j& The more this matter of a Portage railroad along the Col umbia is stirred up, the worse it smells." The government has shown its good will toward the cana by having already set aside funds for removing an obstruc tion in the river below the canal mouth. Do not let the poli ticians cause any delay in the work of obtaining the right of way for the canal. The O. R. & N. Co., which owns fully half of the land required will sell at once, for a fair price, and give a good title, all their land required for the canal. All the other owners have also exptessed their willingness to sell on the same lair terms. There is absolutely no reason why the right of way should not be obtained and plac ed in the Governments possession within a month. Then the Gov ernment could commence work in the spring. -But the O. R. & N. Co. will not sell any land for right of way for a portage rail road, and will not deliver it on compulsion until it has been fought through all the courts up to the supreme court. The canal can be half finished before fh the portage road could be started so anxious to have this railroad built in order that they may lease it and thereby get another road .-'into Portland is in anv kind of a XJ J hurry they had better build it themselves. It will save time, but then there would be nothing in it for the Portland grafters. Where would the $160,000 of the peoples money be by the time the portage road got right down to the actual business of laying the rails? Echo answers, nit. the newspapers of the state do wrong in speaking lightly of the tarring and feathering of the so called "Holy Rollers" of Corval lis. Since the days when Lord Baltimore guaranteed religious toleration in the colony of Mary land, there has been need for. de manding toleration, even of those whose views may seem absurd to us. Once start the craze of tar- ting and feathering every absurd form of religious worship, and the evil will spread, and the mon ster ot intolerance will demand as many victims as the French revolution. If there are persons who, in the guise of religious worship, commit infractions of the moral or criminal laws, let them be tried by the courts, and under the laws of the land. It is only ignorance and brutality of the most flagrant character to ie sort to force and cowardly mob rule. Unless checked it will be resorted to more and more, until religious freedom is annihilated. Salem Journal. - The police raided a confection ery store at Corvallis last Satur day night and found a poker game running lull blast. The discovery is reported as having caused a sensation. M. BRUNK. PROPRIETOR r Our Brainy Contemporaries. About a week ago the citizens of Corvallis a part of them at least took two of the sect, known in common parlance, as Holy Rollers from their home and applied to them a coat of tar and feathers, and on the following night, hearing that they had re turned, again visited the house with the avowed intention of taking them out and hanging them. Now to a man in the dis tant background it looks very much as if these Corvallisites were carrying their hatred of a religious sect entirely too tar, It may be and no doubt is true that these so called Holy Rollers are not in line with the modern idea of religious worship but surely they afe not entitled to the rough treatment they have re ceived. They are accused of nothing worse than praying, long and loud and oi possibly roasting a few 'prowling cats" on a bon fire. Since the stoning of Stephen it has been a popular amusement with the people of all ages to abuse religious fanatics or those whom they did not consider strictly or thodox, yet in every instance re corded in sacred or profane his tory future events have clearly showed the lack of wisdom on the part of the aggressors. We know nothing of the merits of the beliefs of the Holy Rollers, but will- venture the assertion that Corvallis is and has been for years past tolerating things, be side which the Holy Rollers would appear as pure gold beside tarnished brass. It is to be doubted whether the Holy Roll ers have transgressed the laws of moderation and reason any fur ther than have those who have persecuted them.
