s HE CORVALLiS GAZETTE TUESDA, SEPTEMBER f 9, 1003. , Did it ever strike yu th it tlie man who docs'gooi firm Lag sel dom has an unfavorable season. More crop failures are due to the farmer himself, than to droughts, floods or untimely frosts. The man who plows deep eatly in the season, who cultivates frequent ly' and. late in the season, who looks alter his trees and sprays thein when needed, -who looks as carelully to his business as a mer chant or banker in a city does to his, seems to stand in with Provi dence much better, and have bet ter success than the man who scratches his land and puts the blame of his own ignorance and inefficiency on that convenient scape goal, the weather. Think the matter over, genllemen. One of the tender hearted young ladies of Corvallis thinks that an article against the "hor rible cruelty practiced by some of our neighboring nations" - would be very appropos at this time. She is not so particularly bitter against the Turks, because that is so lar away, Dut ngni here near home they are prac ticing such cruel sport that it deserves a reprimand. Only a few days ago, at a bull fight in Jaurez, they killed bulls and horses, and those brutal Pica dors and that horrible matador and they ' say that ycung girls really laughed and clapped their hands, and shouted "Bravo, Toro!" when a horse was wound ed, and she doesn't see how any one can like such cruel wicked sport; how any one can be so real barbarous -and if I would be so good as to give them fits about in, and "Oh! aren't you so glad that the football games . commence next month. 1" .y - flf 1 'v ' The yellow journals of the country are parading the crimes of the Turks and the horrors of Mohammedanism in an eflort to involve -this . country in a war with Turkey. Such talk is the rankest kind of nonsense. .This . is one the times when the policy "'. of minding your own business is the best thing and the hotheads should not be permitted to lead us into a quarrel "for 'which we have no just cause. Germany is weeping and wailing at the cru cities practiced on the y poor Christians of the Balkans, and at the same time is quietly making an honest groscheri by furnish ing Turkey with "improved fire . arms and smokeless powder: Russia waxes indignant at the horrible massacres in Macedonia, -but closes one eye when it is a case of Jewish outrage in her own cities of Kishinef and Gomel. England, with her heart overflowing with pittie rushes a war - vessel to the Dardanelles, only to bring back an interest payment on her bonds, paid from the forced taxation that caused - all the trouble. If Providence would only bring an earthquake where it would do the most good. Europe would almost be obliter- , ated. , if jf flf When the plucky express mes senger on the O. R. & N. met the advances of the train robbers with a bullet, he furnished the best solution of the hold-up : problem. The most rigorous - laws have been passed in many states, but the hold-up industry has not been discouraged in the least. These men are naturally cowards. They can be restrain ed onlv by fear. Introduce into their business the 'element of - positive danger, and you; have taken a long step towards its suppression. One thing sure the man who catches the bu llet retires permanently from the business, and you have got the balance of the gang scared. There is altogether too much lawlesness among the youth of the land. The great need is a lesson that they will take to heart. It is from this class that the ranks of hardened criminals is recruited. When parents have failed to recognize - their responsibility in the train ing of their children, then they have abandoned their rights in . the - premises to the public, and the public have acquired the bright to protect themselves in the best way they can. The Express messenger has pointed . out the way. I,et the public take the hint. . . -At the Photographer' Associa tion of the Pacific Northwest, which convened in Salem -' on, the 23rd, 200 delegates were in attendance, representing the states of Montana, Idaho, . Washington and Oregon, and British Columbia The finest competitive display of photographs j ever collected by the Association is on exhibition, - WOMAN'S RELIEF CORPS. An Important Adjunct to the Grand Army of the Republic. The people of the country who have become accustomed to look upon the Grand Aruiy as a lot of pensioners, whose principal aim in life is to live upon the govern ment, may be surprised to learn the true state of affairs in this and its auxiliary organizations. present below a lew statistics, which the president of the corps of this city, Mrs. Sarah Cronk, has kindly furnished us, which will open the eyes of the public, and perhaps cause them to feel more kindly towards the noble men and women who have done so much, who have merited the best that a grateful nation could bestow upon them, and' who have received so little at its hands. See what the figures show. The Wonan's Relief Corps is the largest patriotic and benevo lent society in the world. From its organization until June 30, 1902, the W. R. C. has expend ed for relief, $2,347,956.04. During the past year the National organization has expended for relief, $160,008.91; for W. R. C. Home, $11,263.71; for army nurses not in W. R. C. Home. $130; for the McKinley Me morial fund, $1000: for Southern Memorial Day, $85545; for Sons of Veterans Memorial University, $127; for Anderson ville Prison property, $1,237.80. : - The department of Oregon has expended for relief during the year, $289.90; turned over to Posts, $229.05; estimated relief other than money, $354.60. Corps No. 7 expended for ie lief during year, $25; estimated relief other than money, $75. - The croakers' ' who pass their time in railing at the fast fading army of men who stood up for nag when the country needed them, should hide their heads in very shame at this exhibit. PHILOMATH ITEMS. Mr. and Mrs.- Underhill have gone to visit their daughter Mrs. A.Hulbert at Oakville, Oregon. Miss Gertrude has returned from Hood River where she has spent the summer, with her grand-parents. - Mr. Weed has recently pur chased a piano. "". The schools -have all an in creased attendance and enthusi astic opening. Mr. Chas Logan, the clever cartoonist, is back ready for work. .. . Mrs. J. E. Henkle is at Port land for a few days. Allen of this city, now employed by the United States Census Department in California, met with a serious accident caused by the upsetting of the Quincy and Oro stage. He sustained . "a fracture of the right fibula,, one inch above ! the- ankle joint and a -fracture of the seventh and eighth ribs. The accident occurred two miles from Quincy at 7 o'clock on September 23.- Six other passengers and the driver were injured at the same time. He was brought to Quincy. and cared for - at the Plumas House. He is atteuded by Di Joseph Mc Cheeney, who says that he is rest ing easy, and .without complica tions will come out in good shai Colonel H. E. Dosch, while at tending the National Irrigation Con gress at Ogden, says the Oregonian of Friday last, had a long chat with Secretary Wilson, of the Agricul tural Department, who in speaking of the State Agricultural College said: "Those Corvallis people are doing something arid are showing results," and the emphatic 'mari ner in which this was said pleased Mr. Dosch very much. - Directly on his return, Colonel Dosch went off up to Coryallis to attend the opening 01 the "Agricultural Col lege and fulfill his promise to de liver an address to thi students on "The Home Life. and" Folk-Lore of the Japanese," -which was well re ceived- . . . - A PITILESS MALADY. Darrin Gives Hts Opinion on Rheuma tism andjls Care. , "Rheumatism is a moat pitiless mala dy' exclaimed Dr. Darrin to a questioner regarding it. "It destroys the poor tvorkingman as quk-kly R3 the man of wealth. It gets iulo the blood leaved its grip upon the tissues and destroys health and happiness, besides causing intense pain and suffering. I would urge o;ie to fight it npon first sight as they would a snake; get it out of the blood and free the tissues of its blighting influence. Electricty applied by my method will chase it into a corner and destroy it. "J have a system of treatmeut that frees the blood from uric acid, stops the paia and suffering, gives strength to the muscles and nerves, it cares the worst cases of rheumatism in a remarkably short time." . y There is nor question but what Dr Darrin has been unusually successful in the treatment of rheumatism since he has been in Albany Every day rheum atic suffers are seen hobbling to the Revere House and on leaving have the appearance of having found relief, and when spoken to regarding their case, they speak in highest praise of the doc tor's treatment. The following outspoken recommenda tion from a man so well known as L. W. Moench is one of the strongest reasons why people should look into the merits of Dr. Damn's cures by electricity and skillful medical treatment.- -The doctor has been prevailed on to remain in Al bany until December 1st and is visited by scores of sufferers daily and why any one with good judgment can see their friends and neighbors cured and not grasp the opportunity to try Dr. Damn's new svstem of cure is beyond our com prehension, .y' Mb. Moench's Card. To The Editor : For years I have beeu-troubled with sciatic rheumatism, liver and kidney complaint and dyspep sia. Three month? ago I was unable to work, or even put on my . shoes , without great suffering. Dr. Darria has so far restored me that I am able to work every day. My troubles are all gone and I teel lite a new person and I gladly sub scribe my name in Dr. Damn's behalf and recommend him; to the public. I reside on Fourth and Main street, Albany and will 'answer all questions by letter or in person. ''..; - L-W. Moench. Dr. Parkin's Place of Business. .
