THE COMUIS SHETTE. TUESDAY, OCTOBER 0, 1900 Eor President: william Mckinley of.;Ohlo. for VSC3-P resident: THEODORE ROOSEVELT of New York. For Presidential Electors. TILMON FORD Marion County J. C. FDLLERTON Douglas County V. J. FURNISH Umatilla County O. F. PAYTON- -Multnoinah County PRETTY NEAR IT. The Republican National Committee has gone over the political situation thoroughly and carefully and has given its estimate of the result of the presidential election. As it is less than a month until election day the situation is not apt to be materially changed from now on. The following is the very conserva tive report of the committee: "The committee, desiring to be careful and conservative in any statement they give to the public, assert that the republi cans will carry the following states beyond question: Califor nia, q; Connection t, 6, Dela ware, 3; Illinois, 24; Iowa, 13; Kansas, 10; Maine, 6; Mary land, 8; Massachusetts, 15; Min nesota, 9; Michigan, 14; New Hamshire, 4; New Jersey, 10; New York, 36; North Dakota, 3; Ohio, 23; Oregon, 4, Pennsyl venia, 32; Rhode Island, 4; S. Dakota, 4 ; ington, 4; Wisconsin, total 266; 224. Vermont, 4; Wash West Virginia, 6; 12; Wyoming, 3; necessary to elect, "This does not place Indiana in any column with its 15 votes The fight in Indiana will be closer than in any of the other States, but with the thorough or ganization which the republi cans have in that state, and with a popular state ticket, the chances are very largely that these votes will be found in the McKinley column, which would give 281 electoral votes for Mc Kinley and Roosevelt, as against 271 votes received four years ago." DEMOCRACY ON BRYAN. The executive committee of the ,gold democratic party issued a stirring address to the mem bers of the party last Friday. The gold democratic, organiza tion will cast its vote directly for Mr. McKinley this year, and not indiractly as it did four years ago. The address concludes: "Mr. Bryan seeks power by an appeal to the anti-expansion and anti-trust sentiment of the people. The difficulties of our external policy were unforeseen, as their solution is at present unrepealed. The evil of trust has no party parentage, and will be remedied by the combined in telligence of all parties. With out minimizing the perils of either, we affirm tliat no greater evil can befall our government than the impairment of its vigor, the destruction of our credit and the ruin of our indus tries, which Mr. Bryan is special ly pledged to effect if he gets the power. Therefore we appeal to ouf countrymen again to avert disaster to their country by his defeat." .Four years ago uregon wa9 not only "fighting ground," but it took a republican whose bump of confidence was abnormal to place a wager that tho slate would be found in the McKin ley column. Now Oregon is conceded for McKinley even by Chairman Jones. What a pleas ure to live in a state where the oeoole are willing to learn, and where prejudice dees not blind them to their own interests. Our contemporary contem plates the probable increase of onr standing army to 100,000 men with well-feigned alarm, and asks "When will it be 200, 000?" In order to relieve sus pense, we answer: When Mr. Bryan establishes his protector ate over AgTunaldo's anarchic government, and attempts to sustain it against a hostile world. County Court. The commissioners' court of Benton county convened Wednes day, October 3rd. After the usual routine of business, dur ing which many bills against the county were allowed and ordered paid, the following spe cial matters occupied the atten tion of the court: In the matter of a bridge across the Luckiamute liver in Kings Valley, M L, Frantz was awarded the contract for redeck ing the Frantz bridge for the sum of $60.65, tas heing for material alone. Forthesumof $44, the same party was allowed contract for cor structing a new bridge across the Luckiainute between the Frantz and Watson bridges. For the joint work he will receive $104.65 when completed to the satisfaction of tho court. It appearing to the court that a new bridge should be built across Marys river at the site known as the Hartless bridge, it was ordered that the oouuty clerk advertise for sealed plans, speci fications, etc., also for bids for construction oi same according to approved plans, etc. The ooutract to be awarded to lowest responsible bidder. In the matter of petition of Dedrich Mohfield for road, or gateway, from his residence to the publio thoroughfare, W B Kiger, G H Wamsly and Jas E Davis were appointed viewers and appraisers in the matter of location and damages sustained by parties across whose land said gateway must extend. Said gateway is to b& fifteen feet wide. In the matter of O D Abbott's claim for exemption on tax of 1899, after consideration the petition for exemption was de nied. Sundry persons having repre sented that J W Dunn, super visor of road district number 4, had not done his duty in this capacity and that the road would soon be useless as a thorough fare, said Dnnn was ordered to appear before the court October 13, and sSate reasons, if any, why he should nofc be removed from office aad a successor ap pointed in his plaee. W h Prioe was granted a re bate of $5 on fees paid by him as administrator of M McGrath estate. In the matter of Mulkey-Dixon road, near Philomath, continued for the term. Various persons having peti tioned in the matter of Corvallis Philotnath road, the matter was continued until Saturday,. Octo ber 13. C H Worthington, of Alsea, allowed bounty for one wildcat scalp. In the matter of petition of P H Marley for return of money paid at tax sales, $ 10. 76 was allowed in full payment thereof. The report of S N Wilkins, coroner of Benton county of in quest held over body of James McLaiu was- placed on file. Tho semi-annual reports of the county clerk, sheriff and treasurer of Benton county were examined and placed on file. Freight Rate on Lumber. M. J. Miles, a lumberman from Wisconsin, and who has- spent considerable time recently m the vicinity of the Siletz Indian reserve, has formed a very favor able opinion of the timber of that section. According to Mr. Miles the price of stumpage in Wisconsin is about as much as it will cost to ship from Ore gon East. Stumpage in the East is sold at $12 per thousand while tha freight rate is $13. As a result of the gentleman's investigations it is evident that on the Siletz river there is a vast forest of very valuable tim ber and it appears that Eastern "squatters" have already located on tho most valuable part of it. From what he says, there is water sufficient iu the river to carry great rafts down to tho mouth," where sawmills will in time be located. Furthermore, there is plenty of water on the bar to admit fair-sized schooners to enter the river and load lum ber for the markets. Regarding Oregon lumber and the Eastern market, Mr. Miles is of the opinion that the present rate will not keep our product at home In this connection he says: He has seen a great deal of coast fir going by his station bound for Atlantic seaports, and even great logs 100 leet long and squaring 18 inches at their r SKIN IRRITATIONS Instantly Relieved by CUTICUM For irritation, itcli- ine. and inflam mation of the skin, for scaly eruptions of the scalp, dry, thin, and falling hair. for red, rough hands and facial blem ishes, nothing so pure, so speedily ffff4iTR na warm baths with Cuticoba. All About the Scilp ud Hair, .-. tops have gone by on three flat cars marked for "Cork, Ireland.' Although considerable timber is still soattered about the East and South, and the Oregon fir is looked upon as the best, and is bound to make a market for itself, even though the freight amounts to $13 per thousand, as at present. He has no tears ot the Oregon forests giving out for a good many years, as he has been among several of them, and they discount any portion of the Great Lake region in magni tude. Belgian Hares.
