Malcom McKay is a great reader of Robert Burns' poetry. He says Major Adams is Bobby Burns alive. S. F. Shattuck and wife are very hospitable i'ple; they are warm friends of Maj. Adams. They are white. We hoie to see Crater Lake Park prove a suc cess it would be of great inipntance to Oregon as a State to get it. Dr. Davis, of La Centre, will purchase Indian relics especia'ly rare ones, and will py a good cash price for the same. Below we give a synopsis of the provisions of the new rejdatry la, and the action to be taken iu the matter. It should be read by every t ter : " Mr. Mason kin Uy took pity on our cow and calf and took them out of the storm and gave them that wherewith to keep them m health and strength. The Hillsboro Independent is to be enlarged to a svet-n column folio. We are glad to note the above, and hope the Independent will keep on the upward grade. On our late trip to "acoina w Raw not a single Chinaman. Every white person appeared to get employment, and the merchants par ticularly were jubilant over the fact of their increased monthly sale. It has stopped a great leak jn the tieusary of the country. All the money is circulated here, and don't go to Asia. Asia is a very nice place, but ought to be able to furnish its own circulating medium. We thin v Chinamen look nice in pictures and as statuary. We stopped tk other night at Frank Hoyt's hospitable mansion. We guess Mrs. Hoyt put in all her time cooking. The3-treat-d us like a King. Mrs, Hoyt is a Lonsdale. The Lnii.da!e family in Knglan i is one of great antiquity, the Countess of Lonsdale being a celebrated English Wauty. There are two fine bovs growing" up. They are splendid little lei lows, "full of life and fun. Clarence Pickering. Frank's nephew was there on a visit. He is a fine tall gentlemanly young man,and will make his mark in the bat tle of life. A BRILLIANT PPER. Under the aljove heading Thk Vinpicator of East PortLind has the following about us. Usually the St. Helen's Columbian ai jears on Thursday, but ou last week it did not come out until Saturday. The reason was tht Major Adams, its eilitor and proprietor, di 1 not pay up tor his patent outside that was published by a concern in Pjrtlaud. Failing to get Iuh Intent outside he came up to Portland with a whole section of Adams valor in his eye, and had a small war with the publisher of the out fide During the war the gallant major espial his pajers, which were printed and rolled' up awaiting the coin, and s -izing them he Wat a hasty retreat, gained the can ami went home triumphant. He was not followexL as the patent publisher feared the wirlike Adams Mood when it Was at the boiling heat, but Adams ahd his paper was boycotted by the Auxiliary establishment until he was ready to pay up and pay in advance for all future orders. The major waited in vain for his outside the present week, and on Wednesday he issued his paper, with the 1st and 4th pages blank. Those who saw it said that the outside was the luott interesting one that the auxiliary finn in Port land had ever had a hand in getting out. We congratulate Major Adams ud his enemies in their victory over each other, and liave faith on the major's promise that his paper will soon come out enlarged to double its present si2e. ! No one need growl alx.ut the winter hay for it is so cheap you can almost get it for a song and sing it yourself. Messers Riggs and Dierdorff were tut duck shooting last Sunday. Mr. Riggs was iu an Indian canoe fishing some ducks out of the water and ice, and as a duck hW up Rigg' gun also Cimc up and down came the duck. The recoil of the gun was so great that the consiunce was Riggs went over in tlwj slough and the canoe on top of him. The canee is geting along pretty well. Snow-shoe Wigens is running at large since the last fall of snow. We would try antfeapture him but Columbia county has not got any horses that can overtake hiin. Marion Riggs was taking a run on snow-shoes down a steep incline. He was going like forked lightning, when one shoe ran under a root hud brought him up in a pile. He came out of the tussle second best but has to walk on crutches for s while until his leg and ancle gets better. Mr. J n Wants to whip your corresxm 'ent. Editor ColuraUan, Dear Sir: The weekly edition of the Sunday Orkgox JAK, full of interesting' details regarding the pioneer days of our beloved State, can not fail to rouse the feeling of much resected esteem for the brave and hardy men who laid the -first foundation for its greatness, prosperity and wealth. Of course the road to its present af fluence and standing in the union was fraught with numerous necessary acts ot uiixHisneu and violence, and the reminiscence ot the bat tle fought with the natives, of the many most miraculous escapes from horrible death by tom ahawk, knife, bullet, hunger, accident and a thousand other causes, sends even now a thrill through my frame and causes me to pause and wonder for what purpose an all-wise providence has still preserved me. That the Orkuoniaji and other journals throughout the State, should so far have ne glected to mention my name, (Takima Tack, the Scout of the West,) in connection with the cel ebrated men so intimately bound up with the development and growth of their State, in fact should have ignored me altogether, is not mar vellous. My disposition from earlist childhood having allways- evinced propensity for hu mility, rather than a desir tor renown and ac knowledguisnX of my many virtues and serrsea rendered in & hour of danger and peris..;Ve, the ieople of Oregon have been kind enough in one instance to sue my unrewarded merits, and by the last act of the last illtfptrious session of the legislature, to incorporate this city merely for mv benefit and for the lmrinise only to create an ollice (Marshall) for me. Yet it seems that I am still comparatively Utile "known to the country at large, (alas, to their discredit be it said, as little appreciated,) for to what acts of heroism, valiant deeds, of patriotic enthus Lism and display of my enormous physical ami mental powers might 1 not easily be urged and jinpolled by only a little share ot public grati tude in the hea- ts of the inhabitants of this newly incorporated bui"h. And because. I feard that when the nomination for my present office waH LW and . its acceptance Hrgod upon me. my-extreuie tnodesty . at first revolted, but knowing that 1 would save tha city from polit ical chaos, and I confess, a little fluttered and building solid castlts of future glory, I condes cendingly accepted the nomination and glori ously carried the election. Total number of votes pilled 12, and 1 recti veil, to my astonish ment and to the grater honor of the JHSOplO of Rainier, every vote cat on this auspicious day. In order to give the country a chance to re view my past valuable services rendered the State of Oregon in partisnlar, and in our instance to the maintenance of the union. I will endeavor in a series ofjsketches t3 portray myself as linked with their prcgreM, and hope that you will be iicbued with the right spirit of their value and make them ' public through the columns of your valuable paper. Long before the Takima war of oj '.VJ, I think it was in the year '42 or '43, some 45 years ago I am not certain as to the exact date, in fact never could remember dates very Well, which defect is, by th. way, so.uetiai a great convenience, particular' to myself, as, if 1 could recollect them, I would for instance be a terrible old man of some GOO years or there abouts, instead of a compaiatively young man of GOtliat 1 caW across the plains in company with my uncle Tom. and an ox-team, in the employ of the Hudson Pay Company.
