S moke S ignals SEPTEMBER 15, 2016 Willamina Elementary receives ‘Let’s Move’ award WILLAMINA — Willamina Elementary School was honored with a 2016 “Let’s Move! Active Schools” national award for its efforts in creating an active school environment on Wednesday, Sept. 7. Only 544 schools in the United States and only four school districts in Oregon received the honor in 2016. The award is part of first lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move!” initiative dedicated to ensuring 60 minutes of physical activity daily as the norm in K-12 schools nationwide. “Wellness is critical to school success,” said Willamina School District Superintendent Carrie Zimbrick. “Our PE staff strives for total well-being for our students.” Regular activity not only helps youths stay healthy and strong, but it also can lead to higher test scores, improved attendance, increased focus, better behavior, enhanced leadership skills and a lifetime of healthy habits. To earn a “Let’s Move!” award, a school must meet significant bench- marks in five areas – physical education, physical activity before and after school, physical activity during school, staff involvement, and family and community engagement. As part of the award package, Willamina Elementary received a large display banner, certificate and congratulatory letter from the first lady. “We commend Willamina Elementary School’s model work around enhancing physical education and physical activity opportunities and inspiring students to go from zero to 60 both in the classroom and in life,” said “Let’s Move! Active Schools” Executive Director Charlene Burgeson. “Willamina Elementary is leading the way in this generation-changing movement that is transforming our nation’s schools into active and healthy hubs.” Attention full- time students All full-time students must submit verification that they have applied to a scholarship outside the Tribe before funding will be released for the term/semester. Verification can include a scholarship award or denial letter, e-mail verification that an application was submitted, a copy of the application or the financial aid award letter that lists an outside scholarship. Please contact Education at 1-800-422-0232, ext. 2275, if you have any questions. There is a registration fee of $25 dollars for the conference.
