r n Spilyay Tymoo, Warm Springs, Oregon Festival of Nations this weekend The Sixth Annual Festival of N ations: A G athering a the River, will be held Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 10 and 11 in the Cascade Locks Marine Park. The Warm Springs tribes and the com m unity o f C ascade Locks w elcom e the Yakama Nation, Nez Perce and Umatilla tribes, as well as other indig enous performers such as the Halau, Chinelos, Aztec and Ha waiian dancers. The dancers will all participate in a celebration of cultural heritage and tradition. The festival is also a time to learn about salmon restoration and stewardship of the Colum bia River. On Saturday, Sept. 10, there will be the 10k Salmon Run to Eagle Creek, and a one-mile run run/walk on Thunder Island. The run commemorates the re turn of the fall salmon. Registration starts at 7 a.m. in the Cascade Locks Marina Park; or call 541-553-4883, or 541-553-3243 for registration forms or information. Featured on this year’s event poster is a painting by Stephanie B ap tiste, a 15-year-old Nez Perce student. “The Gorge represents my culture; I am Nez Perce and the river was an important part of my heritage. I think it is impor tant that the rem aining land should be untouched and un damaged,” she said. Stephanie’s statement ties in perfectly with the message of Gorge 25— the Twenty-Fifth Annual Celebration of the Co lumbia River Gorge National Scenic Act, which is being rec ognized this year with fnany events throughout the Colum bia Gorge. On Sunday, the festival is proud to present E lizabeth Furse as a speaker on peace and Page 3 September 7, 2011 School supply run tribal affairs.
