Spiiyay Tyrooo, W arm Springs, Oregon Resource team approves projects The Resource Management Interdisciplin ary Team (RMIDT) recently approved categorical exclusions for timber salvage operations, spring burn ing projects, and a new manu facturing facility for W arm Springs Composite Products. RM IDT passed resolutions to approve salvage of timber blow n dow n during w inter storms at three primary loca tions. A§% result o f RMIDT’s action, windthrown timber will be salvaged near Bear Springs, Boxwood and Southgate sale areas in the weeks and months ahead. Strong winds blew over more trees that usual this past winter and the Branch of For estry made the request to re cover trees that will provide an economic benefit to the Con federated Tribes. V The Bear Springs salvage will target a Volume o f approxi mately 60*000 board feet of sal vage timber, Boxwood would Page 11 M ^y 1 0 ,2 0 0 7 contribute approximately 50,000 board feet, and Southgate ap proximately 100,000 board feet. Four areas were approved for spring burning projects under the Cat-X process, including Peters Spring (2,200 acres); Tenino ’05 (1,169 acres), Tenino ’06 (1,428 acres) and Lower M utton (940 acres). The burns will reduce the risk Of cata strophic wildfire by consuming hazardous fuels and help rein troduce the natural element of fire to the ecosystem. RMIDT also approved a Cat- X to construct a '50,000 square foot manufacturing facility for Warm Springs Composite Prod ucts at the Industrial Park lots 13, 14 and 15. The plant will employ 20-3CK people' and the building will be designed for potential future expansion'. All p f the projects approved by RMIDT were subject to miti gation that will protect natural and cultural resources. Bush administration again opposes Mount Hood wilderness expansion WASHINGTON (AP) - The Bush administration said last week it opposes a plan to expand the Mount Hood wil derness area _ the second time in as many years the ad m inistration has opposed plans to increase wilderness prtitectiofis jbii' O regon’s highest peak. Oregon S?ns. Ron Wyden and Gordon Smith proposed the wilderness expansion in February. The plan would ex tend wilderness protection to an additional 128,600 acres surrounding M ount Hood and the C olum bia River Gorge. The bill would in crease existing wilderness protection on the mountain by about two-thirds and add “yrild and scenic” protection to nearly 80 miles of rivers. The Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs has sup ported the plan, but pre ferred an earlier proposal. Ron Suppah, chairman of tribes, testified this year in favor of the bill, hut said the tribe was con cerned that some protections built into last year’s bill were re moved. Specifically, Suppah said the tribe was worried that wilder ness protections in the Colum bia Gorge could be extended close to the city o f Cascade Locks, where the tribes are plan- ning to build a casino and re sort.* “Full wilderness designation on the very face of the ridge running down toward the city of Cascade Locks could unduly constrain the city’s economic options,” Suppah said. Agriculture Undersecretary Mark Rey, who directs UVS. for est policy, said the Bush admin istration opposes the wilderness bill as drafted, saying it moves to seal off more land than ié" appropriate and includes an un acceptable land swap. “While we strongly support public involvement and com munity collaboration, the con cept o f legislating management direction (on the mountain) is problematic,” Rey told a Senate subcommittee. “We find the land exchange provisions and several of the wilderness desig nations to be especially trou bling.” Most of the areas proposed for protection are adjacent to existing ones to reduce poten tial conflicts with other recre ational uses, said Sens. Smith and Wyden. W yden, a D em ocrat, and Smith, a Republican, also intro duced a bill last year to bring 128,400 acres o f the M ount Hood National Forest into wil derness areas, but the plan was never voted on by the full Sen ate. The House passed a smaller wilderness bill that also died. This year, House members from Oregon are waiting for the Sen- Happy Mothers Day wishes. Happy Mothers Day out to our is a good one. The previous Senate bill ran into trouble when the Bush administration ques tioned the amount o f acre ageinvolved and a proposed land exchange involving the owners o f the Mt. H ood Meadows ski area _ the same concerns Rey raised Thurs day. Rey. said the administra tion could support as much as 59,000 acres of new wil derness on Mount Hood, but believes the current plan is too expansive. H e also questioned the land swap, saying that to pro tect the public’s investment, new appraisals should be per formed, rather than relying on previous reports. He also said Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns should have fi nal say over the appraisal, something that she can relate to in her own life. “I recognized 'that from my family story,” Jensen ex plained. “I found that an important story to tell,” she added. Plus, Jensen said, this film ing project gives her a way to speak out against her own government’s participation with the current war in Iraq. Karin Sandberg is working with Jensen on the filming project and also recently trav eled to HeHe. “I t’s a very im po rtant work that is going on here,’? Sandberg said. In Sandberg’s opinion, “It’s a good feeling to see that everyone is welcome here.” “There’s a mixture of pain and a lot o f love at the same time,” Jensen said.
