University of Washington collegians are whooping with Joy today despite the fact that Oregon walloped the purple ana goto gridiron athletes Saturday. Peep, op uressive gloom was dispelled late Sun day afternoon when three grinning students paraded through the pampus district with a drum not an ordinary drum, but a very, very much sought after certain drum.. The story begins away back in 1911 when- a hilarious victorious gang oi Washingtonians kidnaped the famous Oregon drum in a fierce daylight raid. For eight years the drum has reposed oo the U of W. campus as a trophy of voctory. But last Saturday a daring pair of Oregonians celeverly recaptured the drum that had been on display in the windows of a big department store. One youth took off his hat and coat, entered the store and smilingly climb ed into the window. He posed as an employe. Picking up the drum he stepped out and handed it over to a chap who thanked him kindly, walked leisurely out and stepped into an auto which aped away.' ; When it was discovered that the drur had been stolen word was re layed to the campus. A hundred stu dent detectives scoured the city for a clue and finally some one overheard an Oregon co-ed remark that the drum had bee:i expressed to the Multnomah club in Portland and was already safe ly in "home territory." , Three Washingtonians caught the first train for Portland, arriving at 6:45 Sunday morning. They went im mediately to the express office and po lltely informed the clerk that they were from the Multnomah club and were expecting a drum from Seattle. Had it arrived? "Yes, it's here," replied the clerk who 'delivered the trophy, while the Washingtonians signed up on the re ceipt book. Then they entered a taxi- cab and kept riding until time for the first Seattle bound train, which they boarded. Arriving In Seattle they hurried to the campus and staged a celebration In honor of the recaptured trophy.
