A10 Community wallowa.com September 28, 2016 Wallowa County Chieftain Talk series examines importance of place Eastern Oregon residents are invited to talk about power, place, home and belonging during an Oct. 13 event that is part of Oregon Humanities’ statewide This Place series of free community conversa- tions about place. “Place” is a complicated and powerful idea that informs our identities and the way we live our lives, whether we’re talking about the communities we’re a part of, the neighborhoods where we live or the lands that people before us called “home.” This Place is a series of 90-min- ute community discussions spon- sored by Oregon Humanities hap- pening across the state this fall. A local discussion will take place from 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13 at United Methodist Church, 301 S. Lake St. in Joseph. The discussions provide Ore- gonians with an opportunity to ex- plore their relationship to the places they’ve come from and the places they’re in now; to consider how communities have lost or gained land and power, and how this has affected people within these com- munities; to consider the history of neighborhoods, communities, and the state, and how those places have changed over time; and to explore options for meaningful engagement with their places and communities going forward. Participants will come away from this conversation with a strengthened sense of community support and collective engagement around their exploration of place, as well as a resource list and informa- tion to help them continue the con- versation. This Place is part of a statewide initiative by Oregon Humanities to bring 25 conversations about place to communities across the state in September and October 2016. The community conversations will culminate in a one-day gather- ing on Oct. 28 at the Chehalem Cul- tural Center in Newberg. These conversations will be More information oregonhumanities.org/programs/this-place led by trained facilitators from the fields of tribal resource manage- ment, anthropology, conflict reso- lution, applied theology, natural re- source management, ethnic studies and fisheries science.
