A2 wallowa.com Obituaries August 5, 2015 Wallowa County Chieftain Don Van Maren Dec. 9, 1933 – July 28, 2015 Bernice Carol Lathrop July 27, 1937 – July 27, 2015 Lowell Carper Nov. 24, 1934 – Aug. 2, 2015 Don Van Maren was a man known by many names. He was Don to his parents Katherine and Harold, older brother Bruce, and younger sister Donna. To some he was Dr. Van Maren, the Optometrist who gave the best eye exam in Wallowa County and could tell by looking in your eyes what you ate for breakfast. To many others he was Uncle Don who would drive his yellow boat around and around Wallowa Lake so his kids’ friends could water ski. He was Dad who shared his love for hunting, horseback riding, hiking and traveling with the ¿ ve children he adored and was so proud of. He was Grandpa to nine grandchildren and Great Grandpa to two. He was Honey to his wife Jeanne with whom he shared almost 61 years of marriage. He was a Child of God who went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on July 28, 2015 at the age of 81. Don is survived by his wife, Jeanne; children: Carrie (Al) Fiedler, Lucinda (Rod) Lough, Mike (Robyn) Van Maren, David (Maureen) Van Maren, and Beth (Zachary) Grant; sister, Donna (George) Gaston; nine grandchildren: Anna, Sarah, Lisa, Lauren, Dan, Caroline, Emily, Grace and Malachi; and two great- grandchildren: Micah and Isaac. The family thanks the staff at Shef¿ eld Manor in Prosser, Wash., who so lovingly cared for Don the last three months of his earthly life. She was born July 27, 1937, in Portland to Lyle Raymond Porter and Doris Elba Gunderson. In addition to Portland, other cities where she resided during her lifetime included Redondo Beach, Calif., Lostine, Summerville, Wallowa, and Imbler. She attended Franklin High School in Portland, and Enterprise High School in Enterprise. She married Kenneth L. Lathrop, Nov. 26, 1956. Bernice was self-employed for logging trucks, and was employed at the ASCS of¿ ce in La Grande, the Federal Land Bank in La Grande, and by the U.S. Postal Service in Lostine. Her hobbies included crafts, gardening, À owers, knitting, reading, and cooking. She also enjoyed watching her grandchildren and children participate in sports of all kinds, including basketball, volleyball, football, baseball and softball. She was a member of the Eagles Lodge. She is survived by her husband, Kenneth L. Lathrop, of Imbler; son Ron W. Lathrop (spouse Sandy), Wallowa; daughter Wendy L. Crow (Grant), Imbler; Son Tim S. Lathrop (Noelle), Keizer; sister Donna Smith, of Nevada; nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, ¿ ve nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother, Doris Snodderly, and sisters Carolyn Terwilliger and Shirley Wheeler. A service is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 8, at 11 a.m. at Bollman Funeral Home, Mel Byers of¿ ciating. Following the service a potluck will be held at the VFW Hall in Enterprise. Memorial donations may be sent to Bollman Funeral Home, Box 547, Enterprise, OR 97828. William Joseph Locken July 29, 1960 – July 27, 2015 Donald L. Henry, 83, died Monday, July 27, at his home in Island City. A memorial graveside service with military honors will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, at the Enterprise Cemetery. Cremation services are entrusted to Daniels-Knopp Funeral and Cremation Center in La Grande. Don was born on Jan. 12, 1932 in Alexandria, South Dakota, the son of Manford and Pearl (Betts) Henry. Donald moved to Joseph in 1946. On Nov. 26, 1952 he married Nadine Crader in Lewiston, Idaho. He entered the U.S. Army on Dec. 11, 1952 and served in the Korean War. He attained the rank of Corporal prior to his honorable discharge in 1954. In 1960 they moved to La Grande where Don was a business owner and worked for Boise Cascade for 29 years before his retirement. After which he worked for Weishaar Farm and he and his wife both worked as drivers for Frontier Motors until he turned 80. Don was a member of the McEwen First Baptist Church. He belonged to the American Legion and was a former member of the Elks Lodge. He enjoyed walking and reading. Survivors include his wife Nadine of Island City; daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and David Lewis of Union, Reta and Rocky Smith of Lakeside, Mont., Sherry and Greg Beickel of Portland; sister and brother-in-law, Mareta and Wayne “Chris” Christensen of La Grande; three grandchildren, Cindy, Garrett and Ethan; other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Raymond, who died in 2010. A memorial service will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 6, at the Enterprise VFW. Cremation services are entrusted to Bowman Funeral Home in Enterprise. Lowell was born on Nov. 24, 1934 in Wallowa, the son of Henry and Ruby (Burnett) Carper. A lifelong resident of Wallowa County, he graduated from Enterprise High School in 1953 and married Mary Sue Heath in Enterprise later that year. He served in the U.S. Army Reserve and attained the rank of Staff Sergeant prior to his honorable discharge. Lowell drove logging truck for many companies over the years, including B.W. James and Timber Transport. He also worked as a mechanic for the Wallowa County Grain Growers and the International and Ford dealerships in Enterprise. In retirement, he volunteered with the Hells Canyon Mule Days and helped with holiday meals at the Community Connection Senior Center. Survivors include his son Ricky and daughter-in-law Joan Carper of Atlantic Beach, Fla., daughters and sons- in-law, Ronda and Edward Matos of Olympia, Wash., and Christa and Michael Richard of Lake Charles, La.; sister Rosemarie Reynolds of Enterprise; four grandchildren, Carrie and Mickie, Lisa and Matt; and three great- grandchildren, Tino, Milo and Ruby Sue; plus friends who were like family to him, especially Mark Bird, Bill Coffin and Vesta Jacobs. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, LaVeda Watson, of Joseph. Lowell’s family wishes to thank the Wallowa Valley Senior Living Center staff, especially Amy Ratliff, the doctors and staff at the Winding Waters Clinic, Nurse Holly at the Enterprise VA Clinic for all their care and assistance for Lowell. In memory of William Joseph Locken, who passed away July 27, 2015, at St. Anthony Hospital in Pendleton. Bill was born on July 29, 1960, to Elmer Lee Junior and Irene Miller Locken at St. Joseph Hospital in La Grande. Bill lived in Cove until age 4 when the family moved to Joseph. He graduated from Joseph High School. After graduation he lived in Cove, Pendleton and Enterprise. He worked for Stangel Buffalo Ranch for many years. Bill married Carolyn Jones on May 5, 1990, and later divorced. He then married Tina Loumena on April 24, 2015. Bill loved to hunt and ¿ sh and go to deer and elk camps with his brothers, family and friends. Bill is survived by brothers Dan (Cheryl) Locken of Cove, John (Carlota) Locken of Pendleton, sisters Anita Lagoy of Vancouver, Wash., Lynn (George) Drivdal of Walla Walla, Wash. Son Chance Lee Locken of California. Companion and friend Nancy Baker and Gordy of Joseph. Grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews and many friends. Bill was preceded in death by wife Tina, parents Elmer Lee Junior and Irene Locken, sister Alice Needham, son Jeremy Chilton, grandparents Lester and Ida Miller, and Elmer Lee Sr. and Lanore Locken.
